I can't deny the old boy holds a soft spot in my heart, but there's quite a few disparities with his character that have always bothered me.

While most his quotes demonstrate an aversion towards mortal food, the stat penalty means you're going to be eating even more of it than usual. Souls are too easily spent elsewhere to really consider them a more favorable food source, especially given the changes to soul-hopping introduced back in Wickerbottom's rework

Then there's the remorseful part of his character. don't think this is conveyed quite as much as it should in-game; only ever coming up when you run out of souls. Something that happens often, to be fair, but as for reasons stated above, not because you're actually sucking them down.

And finally: the cursed hands. This only shows up in about two quotes which is strange given it seemed to be one of the main motifs in his main menu and animated short. Maybe it's a remnant of something from earlier in his development? I really couldn't say.

Oh, and there's also his idle animation. It's weird. Understandable given that  it was the second ever unique idle animation they made, but it's weird.

Overall, while these aren't the most dire issues concerning the imp, I'd appreciate if they were taken into consideration were the old boy ever given another look over in future updates.

I don't mind all the food mechanic. Also the cursed hands makes sense if you think how people just work around for example disabilities so they are living as normal as possible. Same with Wortox. He just tries to not touch anything he likes to keep alive as mentioned in his quote with chester. (I guess one quirk could be that Wortox players can't hold living creatures in their inventory, but that'd be too annoying imo.)

I agree on the idle animation though. Always weirds me out a little. Imo a way better/cooler one would be if he'd just twirl around a soul on his hand or something.
Maybe as a dark twist even a rare chance for an animation to play where he lets a bird land on his hand, accidentally starting to pull out the soul, and while panicking shoves the sould back in the bird, letting the bird fly away. xD

Wortox in purely technical way is really good character but he is very messy if we talk about his personality or lore. Some time ago I had a topic about Wortox. Even now I consider him as a opportunistic liar:

- He ssually says that knows everything but never tells anything what seem more like he's trying to show himself as more important that he really is.

- He is last coward what is shown in his quotes about bigger enemies.

- He don't know how like his power works (Terraria crossower)

This topic exist in like 5 quotes and I must admit this's something what I analyze to this time. These motives - soul eating, mortal souls etc - I saw in some films and lots of video games. In moral way that can be considered as "act of supreme evil" and I always wondered why such a gloom topics are so popular and treaded rather careless. Additionally moral aspect of these stories are just not present, characters don't have thoughts abaiut that. The only exception is DST but even here this topic is highly limited. Other survivors even can't examine soul to avoid inconvenience.

By the way in DST there are lots of arguments that this red thing called "soul" is no real soul.

Well in Terraria crossover animation he hugged Wilson and nothing happened.

I agree there. It's especially weird considering his character description puts his guilt front-and-center.

I remember at some point there were some quotes for releasing souls in the code. It's kind of sad they never implemented them.

These quotes are from Forge so they are theoretically implemented.

Are you certain? I might need a refresher but I'm not remembering anything soul related in the Forge.

Wortox came after the Forge events, I'm inclined to think they might not be correlated.

When he examines Champion Adornments during Winter Feast he says: "I remember when we played there!" so it seems he was there (by lore).

Of couse Wortox didn't exist during Forge. I suppose these quotes are for modders.

The food thing I think makes sense. Souls to him are probably tasty, as his natural intended food source. Whereas mortal food nourishes him less and doesn't taste as good. You can't exactly control what TASTES good to you or what is better for your body. But as an intelligent being, he also recognizes that the thing he enjoys/is meant to consume... is incredibly immoral. Feeling regret about surviving off of an immoral act isn't a contradiction.

The knowledge thing. He's from the Constant, and more intelligent than most of the creatures there, with an incredibly strange power. He probably knows more than average and THINKS he understands the world around him, but then "mortals" come along and start doing things he views as strange. He's probably in the middle of learning how much he does not know and grappling with that?

The cursed hands thing... Yeah that one is odd. He makes a big deal of it but it does nothing?

Pretty sure the only reason he doesn't have the "no living things in inventory" downside is that some structures require living ingredients, especially the prestihatitator which is critical at the start of the game. If not for it and bee boxes, it could have been a fun downside.

I think it's more a way to keep things simple when you look over various quotes there are quite afew character contridictions Wurt says can see in the dark. Then there's Walter who despite saying otherwise seemly has no problems killing small animals. Then there's Wigfrid whose meat only motto is just a meme at this point.

They actually changed that first one a few updates after her introduction if I remember correctly, but otherwise that's a fair point.

Yea they took away the can still see quote but I still feel like the one where she says she can see charlie still kinda impiles but maybe that's a stretch.

What if a living creature in Wortox's inventory drained in hunger constantly to represent its rapid deterioration in contact with him?

That would offer the cool little drawback while not literally making crafting those things impossible (a Wortox trying to craft with the creatures would just need to keep feeding them)

Also has the side effect of giving some progression to Wortox, encouraging him to get bundling wraps to hold living creatures for much longer (assuming that still works? i dont remember) to achieve the 20 souls loophole with living creatures

For the Ancient Gateway, he does say that he hopped through it (when it's powered off) and when it's powered on, he says: "That's how you get imps. Hyuyu!".

So it's possible he did come from the Forge dimension but just wasn't a part of the combat.

If anything, the quotes do give us a plausible reason to believe he's from the Forge.

That’s a pretty interesting proposal. I also like the idea of making weaker mobs drop “Morsouls” so butterflies and the like aren’t as effective infinite wells of hunger healing and teleportation

That or something like reducing his personal naughtiness threshold. Might even be advantageous for some.
