Since when was data collection a thing in settings? And why is it on by default in settings?

Recommended Posts

I was tinkering with my settings today and I noticed a "data collection" option. Since when was this a thing? I never even enabled this. Since klei a tencent owned game company I'm a bit worried on how my data is being used. I have read the privacy policy and they say they're collecting data for "security and safety" and other things but I never even knew this was an option that was enabled in my settings. When was this implemented? I hardly check the settings so maybe this has been a thing since forever

edit: disregard this post, i googled it, it's been a thing since like 5 years ago lmao

No, it wasn't always in Don't Starve Together. It appeared around the time GDPR (the new EU directive: https://gdpr-info.eu/) came into force (at some point in 2016). Klei's older games also received updates to conform to the new data protection law.

Invisible Inc. also received an option for opting out of any data collection in a small update.

In general there was a hasty implementation of this in different services of private companies and public institution alike. It is nothing exclusive to Klei.

does it really matter what data klei or anyone in the world has on you?

actually, yes, it does.
while klei is a fair player that utilizes data only for handling the game's services, other companies might not be and having the power to opt-out of data collection in everything is incredibly valuable.

don't starve aside, this is a terrible argument for not handling privacy, as people's lives sometimes literally depend on it and people generally don't like being surveilled.

Yes, actually. I'd like to not have my data sold to advertisers so they can shill their products to me.

It seems Klei is not doing this, which is good.

Yes. As example your phone number could be "sold" to all kinds of call centers and you would get 86374 scammy calls a day.
