Willow additions along with Maxwell's refresh?

Since Willow's whole gimmick of fire doesn't really exist to her and her only tool that actually does something to the game being Bernie who has quite limited uses lategame and is completely destroyed by the whole lunacy mechanic I think she could use some bit of tuning and touchups to her overall.

She's a pyromaniac and probably also a witch so why not expand on her psychic ability to manipulate fire and all? Maybe she could act as a controlled fire setting herself on fire to deal aoe damage to creatures like bosses like in singleplayer, cause there you could set inventory items on fire to make it work. She'll be too hot to touch, panics mobs on closeness and more damage per tic overall in a cost of combustables and she could do it to multiple to increase that damage. She could have it safe on her, sanity could grow like so while burning stuff and generally be a source of light and heat to those in need. Things like rains and water would be her main enemy. Could see some kind of burning timers like in forge cooldowns for how long the flame will last and how much of the combustable is left to burn before it's gone for good.

Ive always thought of her getting a type of shadow fire that does the same stuff as normal  But is more for combat so you can create mass panic and the passive fire damage
or since we got imbues why not make it possible to give it to her weapons every weapon has the torch effect of  lighting enemies with a flame that does not destroy things.
That also means you can get items back from enemies too since they won't be cooked or burnt

like using standard fire

I honestly forget half the changes since I don't really encounter too often in gameplay. Huh.

I gotta say, I seriously do miss the freezing when insane downside. It was very dynamic and led to some unique interactions and was insanely in character for her.
The old perk was perfect in the sense that it solved itself. Which... is fitting!
She freezes when insane, which makes you want to make a fire. This fire solves the freezing, and promotes sanity gain.
Its in character, and its a simple yet interesting mechanic.


Bringing that back, and making her lighter infinite for her would be my dream additions.

Something important to note is that Bernie also gets entirely voided in Lunar areas. I pray this gets changed.

Yes, I really hope Klei can strengthen Willon like they did with Wurt, Wortox and Wormwood. Willon requires some fire-related harmless abilities, as well as a reduction in some of Bernie's summoning conditions. (Bernie has a very good taunt ability but is difficult to use on creatures other than Shadow creatures)

As much as I'd love for Klei to take a second look at Willow, I get the feeling that the devs might want to focus their attention on just Maxwell's refresh as it's looking like it will involve some awfully intricate mechanics as of the latest patch.

That being said, I feel like Wilson's refresh could be the perfect time for her to get some extra love as well as some of the other characters that are need of some fine tuning. Assuming Wilson's refresh doesn't include too many radical changes that is.

Didn't have much playtime with that mechanic, but tying freezing damage with low sanity seems more annoying than anything else tbh. If you want to stay insane (and reap rewards from doing so) you need to act like it's permanent winter which makes her gameplay just more daunting.

I feel like this topic should be in general discussion rather than the beta discussion until official confirmation they're working on Willow too. The fact that Wortox received a beefy update in addition to Wicker's rework should not be taken for granted and as precedent - the devs already work their butts off! I'm sure if they do come up with ideas & have time and resources to spare, they'd have already heard our voices to improve Willow too.

That said -- strike while the iron's hot, and Willow did have a pretty significant lore drop semi-recently revealed to be a little firestarter lackey to this update's star, Maxwell - and there's no better time than the present to finally give her some needed improvements!

Fire is a very destructive and undesirable element in DST, which has made trying to incorporate it into Willow's kit in context of a resource gathering multiplayer game difficult. But here are some ideas I had that I think would be fairly unique and shape her playstyle to be more faithful to her original archetype as an arsonist, without overstepping into fire sorceress territory too much:

 

  • Below half sanity, Willow now loses temperature instead of her health when hurt by external damage.
  • Willow now gains sanity by setting fire to things, making campfires or adding fuel to firepits, rather than standing next to fire over time.
  • Willow can now throw her Lighter to create a Gunpowder explosion at a cost to its durability.
  • If Willow's Lighter is currently alight, structures and nature on fire in range will not complete burning to a crisp naturally, allowing her or her allies to buy time to put out an undesired fire. *Enemies on fire will remain on fire indefinitely if her Lighter is lit, but continue to take fire damage, burning up their loot if they die while on fire.

The first two changes are meant to streamline Willow's new mechanics of being more sensitive to cold and gaining sanity from fire, making them more engaging and snappier than standing around a fire to regain sanity, and starting fires more often to power your thermal stone, neither of which were very fun.

Losing heat rather than health was an interesting idea I had to mix up Willow's combat options, giving her the choice of becoming colder to tank hits(encouraging her to fight near lots of fire).

And the last idea was my attempt to give Willow some control over fire that didn't feel out of character for her too much, being that she'd be somehow able to keep structures on fire going without fully burning so long as her Lighter was lit (also giving it a use beyond an early torch and oven).

Honestly the more recent reworks have added a ton of cool new mechanics and perks, which make earlier reworks seem to fall short of the others I guess you can say “more fleshed out ideas..”

I am ALMOST convinced that the Klei Devs show favoritism towards certain characters whilst just simply wanting to get others over with and done, the new refresh for Maxwell for example far exceeds Wendys refresh, which personally I would’ve loved a way to appease angry restless spirits, maybe by planting Mourning Glories into a grave plot after a player has dug up the site and looted their resting place.

I’d also like to see an Abigail + Bernie synergy, where Abby can Haunt Bernie to Trigger his Enlarged status without Willow needing to be Insane.

It would be cool if once all reworks are completed Klei cycles back through the list updating them with more changes- the more unique playing X character can feel, the better!
