I think the current loot pool is decent, at least the items you can get on paper, but what i dont like is how they are given.
I dont like how they are given in groups, I think any item should be able to be obtained when you open it, not just all the items in a single group
(ex, getting like salt and thulicite in the same chest)

Another change i would make is making the lures/floats you get from the chest also drop the other varients of them, not just the dusky spoon or the azure float.

But then if strident trident is added to this crab king becomes even more useless than he currently is. I made a thread a while back saying crab king and/or his loot table should be improved, because once you have the pearl and the blueprint, (not even the item, mind you, just a blueprint for an overly expensive item) the only reason I've ever refought it was when they added the sick looking holiday adornments from him.

That's for Klei to address later if they care enough. None wants to fight it for the blueprint anyway, it's just a fight you get out of the way once for the last altar piece to fight CC. And the difference here is you don't get the blueprint, however many tridents you get from the chests and however many chests you get to have is pretty rare and random anyway.

I don’t want to have a reason to fight him more than once. :)

I love sunken chests, but only because I play with both Sailing Rebalance and Unlockable Sunken chests, which makes finding them actually useful.

As it stands, while I will go after Vanilla chests if I'm in the area. The VAST majority of the loot is extremely sub-par. Constituting either simple resources or fishing/boat equipment. And the best items you can get aren't that good either. Walking Canes are a nice boon if you can somehow get them early enough. But the chance of you getting one before winter are sub-optimal at best. And even then, most players are only ever going to need a single walking cane unless you're Wanda.

And then Ruins gems plus Thulecite sounds good on paper, but then you remember that to use them you need to go to the ruins anyways. So at most you're getting an extra crown or staff that you may or may not even craft.

That's exactly why I asked for the fight itself to be reworked too. Most people just don't seem to enjoy the fight at all, it isn't rewarding to beat, and the attacks are tedious. Beating it solo without cheese is far too difficult for very little reward. Take into account how laggy the game is on console and solo console players can go learn to glitch in the last alter piece somehow with less difficulty than the fight.

I literally wasted my whole day once trying to get cane on a pvp server from these chests. I started in spring and looked for them untill winter.

Here is how it went:

1. I locate a bottle - it's a useless quote. Again and again. And again. And again.

2. It's a sunken chest cross. On the other side of the world. 20 minutes to get to it. Inside is a golden pickaxe and some fishing junk.

3. Same as 1.

4. 3 more sunken chests. All have random junk and golden pickaxe. All are half an hour to get to.

5. Step 1 again.

6. My final sunken chest. It's a 5th golden pickaxe.

After 9 McTusks that dropped NOTHING in our single-walrus camp world and no cane on the big ornate chest during year 3, my friend and I decided to go exploring the seas to see if we could get ourselves a cane. After 4 chests full of junk (and incredibly useful boat patches) we finally managed to pull up a chest with a cane, on the monkey island's beach. 30 seconds later a pirate raid proceeded to beat the **** out of both of us and steal my friend's eyebrella. What an experience it was.

With that said, I generally like the loot they have. Most of it are uncommon crafting materials. The only one I'm dissatisfied with is the fishing one. The malbatross feathers and specially the boat patches are great, but there's way too many lures and the rod is unstackable, and generally not useful, since most people already bring one if they are interested in fishing.  The boat parts can help repair your boat if it gets destroyed by pirates or other mobs, but takes a lot of space.

The one with the cane also has a ton of junk. What do I want fashion googles for in the middle of the sea? Even more considering how cheap they are to make anyway. The cane is great, of course, if you had bad luck with your tusk spawns, but the rest of the loot feels too random. It could be just the papyrus and the cane and it would be equally valuable.

But, in the end, I really like sea treasure hunting as an alternative method of getting canes, ruins stuff and various rare materials. Sailing in a group feels pretty good with the new changes and treasure give you a reason to do it. I hope we will get an optional island like world generation in the future to give boats a proper environment.

Needs to be unlockable using the No Eyed Deer antler to turn it into a resuable portable chest with the same amount of slots as the Scaled Chest using up the Antler in the process. You still get the loot inside but get to keep the chest this way.

The loot pool needs an update too.

So much this, I really dislike the preset outcomes. Each and every item in the overall loot pool should have a chance to appear.

I'd also like a small buff to the actual loot available with better items being a bit more likely and some new items added in too.

Y'know. I just realized that; despite being 2 pages long, nobody here's actually posted the Sunken Chest loot pool for reference.

So here y'all go

Now as you may notice. Most of this loot pool is really, really bad.

The vast majority of loot in the chests are basic resources that are easily aquired through other means; often much faster at that. Notably Stone, Gold, and Moon glass. You have a lot of boat supplies. Which I guess is useful to have as backup. But while I can't speak for everyone, I generally keep a single boat for an entire playthrough. And even then it's extremely minimalist, so getting lots of boat kit definitly ain't that great. And as I said before, Ruins supplies are only useful if you're going to the ruins in the first place.

So if you're going for chests, really the only things you'd really benefit from are the walking cane; which good luck. or the Pick/Axe which... actually probably the best source of them TBH. Everything else may aswell just be a nice bonus.

And honestly? I think it would be completely reasonable for sunken chest loot to be completely busted. Spend an hour sailing around the world over and over again looking for chests? Damn straight you should get a ruins stave or something. Some bloke cleared out the ruins half an hour ago anyways.
