Looking at the obvious both of their legal names are william and both of them are from Britain. We also see that maxwell wears a purple suit in ds at some times which is williams main colour delving a little deeper we will also see that they both were presumed dead at some point and went under new identities. Maxwell "died" in the train crash after the fact adopting a new identity as maxwell abandoning the william carter name. The same thing happens to william afton where he dies like 5 times one of those times turning into spring trap as his new identity basically becoming non human kind of like maxwell is. and finally they both fell victim to their own trap.
