How do console players deal with this?

Recommended Posts

Im a pc player but recently my pc crapped out on me so i bought the game on PS4 because it was 6 bucks so why not until i get a new pc. But my god, beyond the controls taking a bit to get used to there is a delay on every action you do. Its horrible and almost unplayable compared to my experience on pc. Kiting is pretty much impossible, you miss your attacks 70% of the time or get hit before your attack even goes off. This is on the official dedicated servers as well where my ping is 30, a comparable scenario for when i play on pc and i had little to no issues.

Is this the normal experience for console players? I know a switch version is coming out, is this how it will play as well? It seems unnacceptable.

Lol I was gonna ask this to Mike as well, I just bought the console edition on Xbox to see how to compares to pc and to try out the new changes and damn the input delay, constant lag, no mods,  no dedicated servers. Kiting doesn't exist I can see why this change is so great for console players cause it just makes managing as Wolfgang so much easier.

Overall it's much slower and methodical on console just because of the controls lol.

Do you have lag compensation set to off??

whenever I play with lag compensation set to off, it just makes the game a whole lot laggier so I don't get why everyone says it should be off

Some games are just not as good on console

it's ok, the game, I mean, it's not as bad people say it is, just takes some getting used to

Looking at the xbox store page for it, it doesn't allow use of keyboard and mouse so even if you wanted to use mouse and keyboard you can't.

Which sucks because some people have a computer they have their xbox hooked into, and would fix a handful of the issues found on console.

(unless i missed something)

I play solo and don't have this issue on PS4.

The very few times I joined pubs I did have a few issues.

Thankfully I enjoy the game a lot more solo.

No i didnt, i had it off on pc though so perhaps that will make a difference; i will try that. Im sure ill get some use out of playing solo, but i still enjoy playing with others.

but yeah we, console players have to live with this, but I've gotten used to it a LONG time ago

and I haven't been spoiled by the luxury of pc don't starve together so I don't know what to tell ya

Its just so jarring coming from PC lol. Like i was greeted with the intro cinematic having framerate and noise stuttering issues.

PS4 has dedidcated servers at least. Im okay with no mods but wow is the input delay rough, i will check and see if turning lag compensation off helps though.

I played the pc version with gamepad, so yea, I can pretty much confirm that, except I didn't have a delay

I really strongly prefer mouse and keyboard for DST and wish they would add support for it on console, but am okay with the controls so far, beyond the occasional clunkiness.

yeah:lol: it's not the most pleasant welcome to the DST console experience

Yeah I had some friends who played console and when I joined them of course I had to pick up the control pad too...  The controls are atrocious on console, like idk how ppl can do anything in game the way those work lol  I'm thankful to be on pc again XD

That's what I experience when I play (on PC) with Lag Compensation: Off. It doesn't help, of course, the fact even closest pubs to me are at least 50-70 ping, nothing below that, regularly >100 ping. I couldn't, for the love of Constant, get use to playing with respective delay at all. Hence, over time, I managed to adapt to estimating how many hits I can land on each-and-every mob with Lag Compensation: On in relation to under-and-over 100 ping servers, even >150 ones. Still, anything over 200 ping is unplayable, given I also rubberband constantly.

I turned off lag compensation and that seems to have helped with the delay? It feels a little better at least when picking up items off the ground and harvesting. I wish the range for holding the x button to harvest and pick up things was increased though, its much smaller than the pc version and is kinda annoying.

I havent tried fighting yet.

It will visually look laggier, however it will be far more accurate to what's actually happening. Therefore, less whiffs when fighting, as the game is technically lying to you when lag compensation is on

but whenever I fight, it never looks like I'm whiffing

Your okay with the controls until you realize there are features of the game designed with Drag & Drop which console does not have.

Reasons why that sucks: PC players can drag and drop low durability items into the ocean to get rid of them, for console players they either need to be kept in inventory and fully used or thrown on the ground and left there till later.

Drag & Drop Meat over a Gnarwail out at sea to tame him: Yeah console can’t do that..

Drag & Drop Twigs or Logs to distract Cookie Cutters: Yeah we’re just screwed here too.

Drag & Drop items over Abigail from a safe distance away from her so you can heal her and manage her without needing to be dangerously close.

Giving Items to Merms or Pigs that are hostile to you (yes that’s a feature… and no it’s impossible on console controller to perform)

At this point I wouldn’t be surprised at all if you can’t just Drag and Drop fuel onto a campfire without needing to be close to it and get the “add fuel” prompt.

You thought I was JOKING or Over-Exaggerating things when I said Console & PC are literally playing two completely different games?

Im not.. and to be honest it sucks, I’ve paid more for my experience, so why is my experience worse then the people who got Hamlet, Wormwood, and even DST for Free just for being in their Betas? I had to pay for all that separately..

The Wendy Main in me feels compelled to say that “It tinges my heart with a bitter sadness & that the reality of things is life just simply isn’t fair, & some people will suffer more then others.”

In a weird way I feel like all the money I and other console gamers have put into this game has paid for all of what we still continue to get, but even then… Our Controller/ Port support is just plain bad.

Try fighting Eye of Terror without Wolfgang’s built in extra movement speed now  Even knowing the kiting pattern: it still manages to hit you during the phase 2 swooping thing it does- it’s either perfect timing or SUFFER Worm..

Guess that’s part of the “Uncompromising” though.

A little tip that I can give for that is press the right (or left I don't remember) stick when you can inspect the gnarwail so it gets selected (until you press B) so you can get the fish from your fridge or saltbox and so you could feed him even if he goes away.

And yes, not having the option of throw things to the ocean or be able to use some items (or Worth teleport ability) that require select some place of the screen with facility is kinda annoying, for the later we have a ring that appear in front of where the character is facing so we don't get that much distance.

Yup, console does have minor boosts with stuff like steering a boat but we don't have access to stuff like placement tiles, aiming with wortox or the lazy explorer, can't drop stuff in the ocean, boats are impossible to repair if theres too much stuff on deck, longer load times and so. Many. Bugs

Soul hopping, fishing Rod casting, haha @sudoku try using Weather Pain or Water Balloons on Console & then you’ll know why we prefer the RWYS Watering Can..

I want someone to tell me if PC Players don’t even have to be near a campfire to put twigs, grass, logs,Nitre or other burnable items over into it though….

Klei says they want to make this game cross-platform capable: PC players will not put up with Console players dragging them down with inferior gameplay.. Before we ever get Cross-Platform play: They will need to play roughly the same first.

These are all problems that have plauged the game on console for years at this point, being present even in the original don't starve released on console and have persisted into dst, they've been around for years but still haven't been implemented, I'm apprictiative of klei and their timing on releasing updates but don't starve console is in the shits

Turned off the lag comepnsation and started teleporting in my own hosted world, turn it on and see myself whiffing, getting hit from far away, and taking forever to pick items. It's been a long time since I've played in conditions like these.

The inventory management sucks, especially when items get shifted around. You can't just skip to the opposite side by going all the way one way, you have to scroll ALLLLL the way back to the other side, to move items, gotta stand still to shift them too.

No, you need to be close to a firepit to put items into it, the same way you need to with chests.

The closest we can get is to use the fire staff from range, while I imagine it's pretty risky to use fire staff at all on console?

Its as easy as clicking on the log in your inventory and then clicking the campfire. No range is required.

Yes a lot of the clunkiness is where drag and drop is concerned. Like  having to scroll through my inventory to put an ingrediant in the crockpot. I understand the limitations but it drastically slows down my play after being so used for 6 years being able to just click twice and be done.

Thats a shame, i turned mine off and it improved. It still doesnt feel as good as being on a good server on pc but its playable. With the exception of teleporting i had all of those issues with lag compensation on. I have yet to try hosting my own world.

You guys don’t seem to understand why I’m asking if PC players can just drag and drop fuel over a firepit without needing to be right beside it.. so let me show you with a Gameclip.

374FCD3D-1DC5-4E91-90CC-1871B9EBB30D.gif.1695f9bb44df5c2a49ec923ff58bb475.gif

i need to run around in circles around this small pit of fire from enemies (in The clip it’s a scorpion, in DST it would be restless spiders, hounds, etc..) I need to find time between my campfire light getting more dim and NOT being attacked by the enemy.. to get close to the fire and refuel it.

IF PC can just drag and drop… I hope we NEVER get cross-Play, because you guys are playing a drastically different game then we are.

Edit: thanks for the clarity on needing to get close to firepit, that would had been very unfair.

I miss pressing 1-9 to use items in my inventory or to switch tools. Now all my gear is on my right side instead of the left for easy access to my gear slots. Also picking up items on the floor, or harvesting without looking at the game is a pain as well, any type of selecting in this game is pain trying to select a target, select items, select stuff off the floor, oh lord
