Why my defrozen dup has the narcoleptic trait

Recommended Posts

I still remember the update said that:

"The Duplicant in the Cryotank 3000 will now always spawn with the "Ancient Knowledge" trait, granting them 3 skill points and preventing them from spawning with any traits that make them bad at tasks."

but in my new save (started after this update), the duplicant I get from the tank has the narcoleptic trait (also the Ancient Knowledge so it is not a version issue). The trait name is in red so at least I think Klei agrees that it is a bad trait.

Now this dup is heading to the magma pool for saving precious food and oxygen, and he wants to know whether there is a bug.

I would interpret the 'bad at tasks' as something that gives (for example) 'Luddite: -3 Machinery', or perhaps 'Trypophobia: Cannot perform digging tasks'.

While narcoleptic would make them bad at tasks in the sense that they stop the task altogether to sleep, they can still perform that task at regular speed the rest of the time - so is kind of on the boundary in a sense.

I get the impression the intention is for the negative traits to be more along the lines of 'mouth breather' so that if necessary you could use that duplicant to 'start up' a colony by themselves and not be locked out of digging, building, or some other vital role at the start of a colony - narcolepsy doesn't 'stop' this, but is a punishing trait regardless.

Nope narcoleptic is not bad at any task. Narcoleptic dupes will perform all tasks at peak efficiency. Sure, they will sleep half of the time, and even stop to work when the task is at 99% done, but beside that... all well.

They get a morale boost when they nap, so there's that.  Some people hate narcoleptics, I've generally got no problem with them (unless they pick a really stupid place to take a nap).  The dupe in the tank still has a negative trait.  As long as they aren't anemic or flatulent, I can work with it.

You misunderstand the patch notes:

1. A narcoleptic can do all tasks and is _better_ at sleeping!

2. A flatulent also can do all tasks an in addition can produce natural gas!

So, in effect, these two are better than regular dupes and hence the patch-notes are perfectly accurate.

Clearly Gurgel has never had a dupe toot into a vacuumed lava chamber and incinerate the liquid lock + half the map. :wilson_angelic:

I just like to write a small satirical bit once in a while. It is a curse of our times that you have to explain these. Not a criticism of you, the current situation of the world has too many deeply ridiculous elements that are at the same time deadly serious. This makes it hard to be sure when somebody is poking fun at things and when they are dead serious. So just to be clear, I was very much not serious. Of course, it is entirely possible you were not either and I misunderstood that.

Sorry @Gurgel, I fully knew you were being sarcastic, I just have something of a personal beef with flatulent dupes. :p Didn't mean to ruin your joke!

No problem. I do not like the gas-producers either ;-)

I got narcoleptic AND flatulent from crio-tank. First, I did not like it; but then I took another flatulent dupe from the printer on the same asteroid and two of them produce quite a lot of natural gas. Yeah, I needed to make filtration for the gas but as the asteroid has additional natural gas production anyway (from oil refinery, wells) that is not a problem.

As you may have more than one dupe for the asteroid, just put a restriction for the dupe to go to the hot places (through door permits). I also restricted flatulent ones to go to the rocket sections.

So it is not that bad. You can make a special schedule for narcoleptic reducing sleep time window and his/her production will go up. They are great at cooking for example (all day round cooking with short sleep breaks) and if flatulent they will also provide natural gas for gas ovens.

and

keep flatulent dupes without athmosuits away from lava - they may burn their asses when they make the wind blow.

I hard skip narcoleptic but if you think about it from an efficiency perspective, it's barely a negative trait. That's because any sleep they get during the day still regenerates stamina, so they spend less time in bed when scheduled.

However, narcoleptic does cause them to randomly drop 2-3 errands per cycle. That's what it amounts to, a few interrupted errands.

Narcoleptic defrozen can learn super-duperhard digging and get my researcher to the resource teleporter, so it is not a bug.
A buggy thing is that all my dupes go into mourning when the defrozen is discarded even if it has already done its duty.
