Mike23Ua
Just encase people seem to “Forget” what Genre of Game Don’t Starve & DST actually were meant to be… And I’m Begging Klei not to screw that up by overly casualizing the franchise. One of my biggest draws personally when picking up a RogueLite/Like is Randomly Generated Levels & overall- Near Infinite amounts of Replay Value. DST however isn’t as randomly generated as I would LIKE for it to be, which is a shame.. the biomes & mobs of DST aren’t full of the unpredictable amounts of RogueLite/Like chaos that they Should be.. So how the heck did it score so high in the top 25 Co-op RogueLite list? And when do you guys think Klei will fully embrace the Genre the franchise is always paired up with? Why is DST so high up on This list?! https://www.thegamer.com/best-co-op-roguelikes-multiplayer-games/#the-binding-of-isaac-rebirth And, AND…!!!! Why do forum members on this Forum argue & debate over rather DST is or Isn’t a RogueLite/Like? Im posting this in hopes that maybe someday Klei will deliver the same kind of RogueLite/Like experiences that I get from games like Spelunky 2, Fury Unleashed, Gunfire Reborn, where each playthrough is unique with biomes, mobs & resources not always being in the same known locations. I’d also like to ask even the developers at Klei what type of gaming Genre they consider DS & DST to be? I’m genuinely curious what type of game experience I’m actually supposed to be playing when I sit down to play DST? According to those videos & that above posted list- it falls into the RogueLite category.. But does it actually fit that category? And if it doesn’t.. then why is it always mentioned within it??? Ive recently had a strong desire to play more RogueLites, so I’ve recently purchased games like Storm Raiders & Outbreak Endless Nightmares. Its kinda sad how DS was the game that introduced me to the gaming genre that is RogueLite/likes, and Now many years later I’m here on the DST forums questioning what kind of franchise it even is anymore. Precisely when you complaint about bosses was because you wanted a more casual experience because "farming 20 walls is too grindy" your post refers to builders wanting to casualize the game but ironically is what you want just focused on losing worlds and dumb destuction while the other side of the community wants real challenges and higher difficulty (nerfs to cookie cutters dont belong here) is being really tireshome to see that you are incrementing your rants about the game's future (on top of hungry french's posts) because you are bored of playing 4 seasons in the surface on loop there are more games mike, no need to be dramatic about 1 that is following a realistic route instead of a childish, silly, boring and not profitable one Edited November 19, 2023 by arubaro 2 Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/120919-questions-that-dont-deserve-their-own-thread/page/172/#findComment-1680600 Share on other sites

Mike23Ua
7 hours ago, Hungry French said: DS still +- resembles a roguelike. DST has it even worse... I mean the key features of a RogueLite/Like are randomly generated worlds/weapons/resources, Deaths that actual Mater (Either permanent forcing restarting to try again, or punishing enough so you don’t want to do it again like permanently losing access to a survivor in State of Decay if they die..) DST would be a FAR more interesting game to me and other RogueLite/Like enjoyers if just a few simple key changes were made and offered up probably under its own type of Game Mode- & that would be that when the player dies they’re forced to go through the rest of the playable character roster until they’ve exhausted all options & have to start over. Its got Nothing to do with wanting nerfs to how many damn Cookie Cutters can swarm Spawn and Stunlock you on top of a tiny Boat Platform.. Its got EVERYTHING to do with maybe finding your Gold Ore (or Pig King) in the Swamps, or on Pearls island or even down in caves instead of having them always spawn in locations the player can “map out” and rush to gather supplies from. It’s got everything to do with Moon Quay island spawning in different shapes & sizes or maybe even broken up into multiple different islands. Or slowly unlocking new characters & skills with each failed attempt at conquering the game to help with the next attempt. DST to me seems to completely forsaken these choices & instead opts for a highly predictable gameplay loop. Nah I don’t want your base to explode or whatever- BUT…. Having more significantly more random generation when a world is in creation & Not knowing what type of mobs are going to spawn out of a Lunar/Shadow Rift or Unstable Portal would certainly help to scratch that RogueLike itch. I just don’t understand how DST can be ranked so high up on these RogueLite co-op game lists if it just.. not really even a roguelite anymore? Like I mean that isn’t just MY Opinion either- check this out… https://store.steampowered.com/curator/31485812-Coop-Roguelike-Games/ Why is DST listed on this list at all if it’s “Not Recommended”?? And would it really kill any of you guys if DST actually offered up a new mode to cater towards RogueLite/like players? I get it… the “Rogue” Genre is a niche category and many many Many people dislike it for whatever reasons, But this year (and next)in particular has been the year of the RogueLite/Like experience. When Klei originally created Dont Starve back in 2013 the RogueLite/Like Genre was a risky type of genre to put the game within, because- Well not many gamers enjoyed the thought of permanent or at least significantly punishing deaths & lost gameplay progress.. HOWEVER 2023 & 2024 have seen a massive spike in this particular gaming genres popularity- Releasing games like MythForce & even games that originally released as NOT Being a RogueLite/Like are even getting DLC expansions to cater to this particular type of Gameplay. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredders Revenge is a RogueLike/Lite DLC. And recently just announced… The Last of Us Part 2 will be getting a RogueLite DLC as well. The Genre isn’t Dead, & while we may be a small niche minority of game enjoyers- 2023/2024 has been the year of the RogueLite/Like. I come to these forums near about every single day not to complain about a game or franchise that I DONT Enjoy, but to suggest features & provide feedback to a game that I DO ENJOY but would enjoy a lot better if it actually had more RogueLite/like elements. I do this because Don’t Starve was the franchise that introduced me to the RogueLite/Like game Genre, and I would be very heart broken if it completely moved away from that type of experience. While yes I do play different RogueLite/likes to satisfy this itch… why can’t the game franchise that introduced me to it in the first place provide a more satisfying RogueLite/like gameplay itch? To any True DS/DST fan.. why would you dare even tell me to go play other games? Rather than to see my point of view and be like.. “Ya know, Maybe for once Mike is actually right about something, and DST could probably offer up a new RogueLite/like mode that better caters to these type of players.”?? Why are these forums so full of hate & arguments and ideas and opinions being shutdown?? Why can’t we all just accept that we all love & enjoy the game/franchise and want to see different things from it? And more importantly- Why if DST is going to be so high up on a list of best co-op RogueLite/likes- Can’t the game have a mode that further leans into that style of play? I have some ideas & suggestions I can make Sure- Like maybe remove or redesign Wilderness Mode so that when a player dies as for example Wolfgang, they can’t use him again until a new game save. But these are just Ideas… and I’m sure Klei could come up with something better. I think the sad Truth here though is that Klei’s Development team over the years have seen many types of developers come and go within their studio, and perhaps the developers who were once passionate about RogueLite/like experiences have been replaced with developers who want to steer the game & franchise in a different direction. I just want to hear the actual developers of the game franchises point of view- What type of Genre is DST meant to be??? If it’s not a RogueLite/like & it can’t get a mode that further caters to that type of experience- I feel heartbroken to even have to say this: but is it time for me to start looking for other games that would be similar to DS/DST that would be better suited to scratch that itch? It’s got everything to do with enemy, items, & danger placement. I can’t be the only one in this entire community who gets tired of always knowing exactly what biome I need to go to to find a specific mob or resource.. I absolutely refuse to believe that. People can count down days till certain seasons, bosses or events will occur in DST and that goes against the unpredictable (and admit-ably mostly luck based) genre that is RogueLite/like. I would estimate that 1 armored is roughly worth 4 unarmored, and that you want a value in the 30s with the all or nothing nature of getting damage dealt with things that die quickly. 1 Link to comment https://forums.kleientertainment.com/forums/topic/120919-questions-that-dont-deserve-their-own-thread/page/172/#findComment-1680938 Share on other sites

Don’t Starve Qualified as a RogueLite/Like because death was permanent and lead to complete progress deletion, You earned EXP and leveled up to unlock new characters for future playthroughs that made it easier to survive. Mainly the Adventures Game Mode (a doorway found somewhere in your sandbox world) was what made DS a RogueLite. You progressed through 5 different randomly generated worlds of hazards and dangers, & dying in world 5 started you over again back at world 1. DST on the other hand- In my opinion has NEVER been a RogueLite/Like, But…. That does NOT mean I can’t request a game mode preset that turns it into one. Klei has been adding more RogueLite/Like world generation options to the game over the years- Most recently we got a setting so that your world is instantly deleted upon death. But Klei could take things a step or two further in the RogueLite/Like game mode if they wanted to- Such as (just like solo DS..) Locking all playable characters behind Exp progression, more randomized generation of worlds & resources Etc.. I would even enjoy a twist on Wilderness Mode where when you die as one of the playable characters they become unusable for the rest of that worlds existence forcing you to play as whoever you haven’t managed to get killed yet.. DS fueled this fire, now I’m begging Klei to pour Gasoline on it with DST.
