Well this is great, juuuust great! So with the hotfix I had the whole "we don't wanna update well just pause it forever" problem. Of course, I just do an uninstall/reinstall, but then when I try to install the game now it says I don't have enough disk space, which is of course preposterous!Anyone else having this problem too or is it just me?

I fixed it, go to steam/SteamApps/downloading and delete everything there

THANK YOU Its working!!!! XD...well...it's still not working, it downloaded the game but then it got stuck just like it was doing before the "fix" now it says "error allocating files" or something like that. SIGH
  • Developer

"error allocating files" is a new one. Hrmmm. Just to be certain - how much space is on that hard drive?

Lets' try to isolate the problem. Try the following:

1) make sure you have more than a gig free on your steam install drive

2) delete local content for the game from the steam library menu

3) shut down steam.

4) reboot your computer

5) start steam, and re-install the game.

Does that work?

sorry Kevin, i said or something like that...i should have been more precise but what it says is "An error occurred while updating dont starve (disk read error)" Just like yesterday before you guys made the fix.now here is a step-by-step of what i did 5 times in a row and it does not work1. I tried playing the game, and it said: an error occured while installing dont starve "not enough free space"2. I tried deleting the game and reinstalling, and once again in said: an error occured while installing dont starve "not enough free space"3. I tried what Keicunk did which is: go to steam/SteamApps/downloading and delete everything there4. I tried installing and it worked, but it got stuck at 100% like yesterday and nwo it says the same thing in did yesterday which is:"An error occurred while updating dont starve (disk read error)"Hope this is clear, and you can help us all, we are starving right now, and the goal is "Don't Starve" (:edit: as a reply to your post, yes i have aenough memory, and yes i did all those steps just like before...but i forgot to restart the PC...so i'll give it a go, and post back afterward.

I have the same problem, tried the "deleting folder in SteamApps" and it seems to be downloading. It seems to be. We will see if it works or not.So, guys when I first joined this forum I was really pissed off because of things not working. Yet, even in the Steam forums everyone is like "No, it doesn't take long to download" "Oh, just ignore the error it doesn't matter" simply refusing to admit that the game has problems. This is roughly the equivalent of a commuter failing to admit his/her car is totally unusable, to the point where he/she decides to push it along to work while whispering "It works fine." I have never seen a pre-launch Beta with so many problems personally. Everytime they fix something, it breaks 100 more things not to mention each update requires you to COMPLETELY delete the game and re-install. I am debating whether this is really worth the hassle.

i think you are over-exagerating the matter, i play since early january and never had any major bug/problems, it only started yesterday with the new patch.other than that, theres always big updates every 2 weeks, and rarelly any major bugs at all.Klei are making a damn fine job XDand the thing about every update requiring to reinstall is completely false, unless someone points to the contrary, i never heard anybody talk about that problem (;

Amidst all the incredibly useful comments in this thread, and having to spend a good 30 minutes re-downloading the entire thing on the advice of people saying to delete the entire Don't Starve directory, I figured I'd actually spend two minutes resolving the issue.Go delete the vcredist_x86.exe *DIRECTORY* in steamapps\common\dont_starve\VCRedist\ , or wherever you put the game, then let the update run. Hell, delete the entire VCRedist directory if you want.

that is absolutely true julz.I am playing this game since it was only a chrome app, pre steam. with non of the regular updates we ever had trouble like this before, never. NotStarving is indeed over exagerating. I had all prior updates working since steam launch and never had to reinstall the game just until this one recent update. I did witness several people over the month in this forum that did indeed have trouble playing the game, but as far as I remember it was almost always an issue on players side, and very very rarely something that came from a game update ( I think there were some issues with certain graphic cards at some points, but I ain't really sure about that). This beta is in fact one of the smoothest I have ever experienced, and I did play in a lot of betas of all kinds of different games. Its absolutely false to say that you have to reinstall the game with every update, or that more things get broken with every fix. Saying that clearly shows a complete lack of experience with beta game development in general, and especially a complete lack of knowledge about the update history of don't starve. We had one broken update from how many? about a dozend? This game is far from having problems.

I did everything and rebooted my PC, and the update still gets stuck at 100% and i still get the error"an error occured while updating dont starve "Disk read error""

Hrmmm. Very odd. I wonder why your install is still stuck there. In your steam\logs directory there is a file called content_log.txt. If you open that and scroll to the bottom, you should find a line that has your error message in it (Disk read error), and Don't Starve's AppID (219740). Can you find that line and post it here? It will give a little more information.

I had two updates since I bought the game. Both came up with errors, where the game would not launch or the update kept pausing. I then followed the advice on the Steam forums to delete and re-install. Go on the Steam forums, I am not the only one having this problem, it is not a falsity like you say.

As I said before, I have no problem if you wish to lie to yourself and look at the world through rose-tinted spectacles. I have no problems if you want to lie to yourself repeating how great things are and how wonderful and perfect everything is. Just don't expect the rest of us sane human beings to believe your delusional ramblings.

EDIT: Of course I forgot to mention that each update I can't play my old saves. It just does not load them. Can you imagine if on a Skyrim or Oblivion update I couldnt play my old save?

Okay, you're going to have to stop doing this at some point. The condescending manner in which you type is really starting to irritate me. As said before, you're prone to exaggerate these things, and if I recall correctly, you're the same person who posted about not being able to open the game full-screen using Windows (though I think "ranting" is a better word for that, considering the language). And no, we are not looking at the world through rose-tinted glasses. Rather, you're looking at this beta with glasses tinted with whatever colour would represent wrath (blood-red, perhaps?).

Yes, you are not the only one having problems. But the degree at which you exaggerate how badly and how common these problems are is simply staggering.

Please, I beg of you, stop acting so rude and hateful. I think everyone would be much more sympathetic to your plights, and more willing to help you with them, if you didn't lash out at them for simply stating the beta is going well despite your problem.

PS: Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if you turned out to be under 12. Or if you completely ignored my advice.

This worked thanks!!!!

Frankly, you have been far more insulting to me than I have been to anyone else. No, I am not under 12 either, but I suspect anyone who doesn't agree with the blind may well end up being beaten to submission (in a literal or figurative sense). After all, this is an acceptable modern social standard; please nod in agreement, or be prepared to be attacked, beaten and scorned until you do agree.Keep repeating to yourself that the game works, that the devs are doing a wonderful job, that it is the best thing since sliced bread. I am merely projecting my discomfort here, I have paid for this product and, whilst it is still in Beta, there isn't much left until its release. That is unless they will be extending the release date. What can I say. Feel free to silence me or attack me for exposing the obvious here.

Don't Starve is in beta. By definition, it is an unfinished game that will continue to be updated until launch. You as a purchaser of the game have been given an opportunity to play the game before it's official release so you can help us make the game as best as we can by that time. It is entirely your choice whether you want to participate during this beta phase. While we do our best to try to keep things as smooth as possible, we can not guarantee that everything will be perfect. I think we have done a pretty good job by any standard, especially considering the fact that we have so many more players and scope of the game is so much larger than we were expecting. We appreciate your perspective and your feedback, but let's keep it constructive instead of using such an aggressive tone.

Seriously, like Addle said, yes indeed you are rude and kind of annoying, you need to stop being aggresive, and he was never mean or rude toward you in any way, so please can we get back to the nice and pleasant atmosphere that these forums usually have?

thank you.

OK, it looks like the VCRedist directory problem. Can you try the solution that @RvLeshra suggested?
