All About Earliest Don't Starve Versions | First Game Builds | Release Notes

THE INFORMATION IN THIS POST IS OUT OF DATE!

[MORE DETAILED AND UPDATED INFORMATION IS HERE]

About a month ago, when I was looking at a wiki page about cut content, and was very interested in what the game was like in 2012. Strangely enough, but I managed to get a lot of information:

First of all, in the archives І found many early Steam game builds, although it took more than three weeks to find them, and it was worth it.
So let's get started with them: (I will describe only November 13/14/18/27/30 and  December 11 game builds, I won't touch on the subsequent ones, because it will take a lot of time, and getting information about them is much easier compared to the above)

If you are good, you can do good things, like build a bird cage for your fine food feathered friends. Or you could eat foster a delicious poor abandoned egg. Whichever path you fancy for yourself, just remember…Krampus is watching.

  • Don’t make the bees angry.
  • Spider nests are crawling with activity.
  • Bird and rabbit traps are more animal friendly.
  • You can build a bird cage.
  • You can hatch Tallbird eggs to gain a new friend.
  • Steam client runs at 60hz on fast computers.
  • Game saves on exit. It also auto-saves every mornings.
  • Updated minimap art to make biomes more readable.

GENERAL FIXES:

  • Traps should work properly again.

30 November Hotfix

Build 70039

Release Notes:

Spoiler
30 November Hotfix Release Notes
Here's a big, detailed list. Hopefully this will break the cycle of poop-and-grass addiction:
FARMS
  • farm plots are fully fertilized when they are built
  • farm plots have much higher fertilizer capacity (used to be 6, now is 10,20,30)
  • Poop fertilizes farms more efficiently and speeds crop growth more efficiently
DEPLOYING / BUILDING
  • an unsuccessful deploy will not consume the deployable
  • chests can be placed closer together
  • non-colliding deployables can be placed closer together
  • twigs and grass to not become exhaustable until you transplant them (in existing saves, everything counts as not-yet-transplanted, because I wasn’t tracking this before)
  • transplanted grass is good for 20 cycles per poop
USING GRASS
  • fillers (other than twigs and petals) can no longer be used in the crock pot
  • traps can be used 10 times instead of 5
  • recipe changes to reduce grass usage:
    • Torch uses 1 less grass
    • Trap uses 2 less grass
    • Bugnet uses 1 less rope
    • farms cost less poop to make
    • Golden tools use 2 less gold
    • Panflute uses 1 less rope
    • rope uses 1 less grass
    • papyrus uses 2 less reeds
    • logsuit uses 2 less rope
    • spear uses 1 rope instead of 2 grass
    • strawhat uses 12 grass instead of 25
    • beefalo hat, beehat, tophat use no grass
    • football helmet uses 3 less pigskin, 1 less rope
MISC
  • Axe, pickaxe (and gold equivalents) last a bit longer
  • Minerhat lasts twice as long
  • Fire fueling values have been updated: (all times for campfire, x2 for firepit)
    • Grass gives 22.5 seconds of light
    • Logs give 75 seconds of light
PIGS
  • pigs don’t eat off the ground as often
  • pigs don’t eat mandrakes
  • pigs can be given veggiesmore often, and will refuse them if you try to do it too often
  • pig houses take 3 days to rebuild a dead pig
  • pigs drop either a meat or a pigskin (75%-25% split)
  • pigs, spider, and hounds can eat pigskins
'You get three cycles of grass per poop.'

14 November Hotfix Release Notes

Hey all,
I needed to fix some chrome-specific menu flow stuff, so I took the opportunity to do a tiny bit of tuning:

Max stack sizes are now:
Large Items - 10
Medium Items - 20
Small Items - 40

One flint always drops from mined rocks. Sometimes you get two.

Differences from the latest versions that I noticed:

The latest version of Don’t Starve is live! If you saw our teaser image last week, you know there’s some new creatures for you to find. We’ve added more “cookable” items and tweaked our farming mechanics. You can get the full list of updates below!

If you want to discuss the latest updates with the developers and the community, head over to the official Don’t Starve forums!

CHARACTERS

  • New monsters – Watch out!
  • Butterflies! – To contrast the monsters, they’re cute and floaty!

ITEMS

  • New vegetables and related items.

MECHANICS

  • Farming overhaul – lots of changes here. It shouldn’t be as overpowering any more. No more food duplicating or meat farming, sorry! We’re not really sorry.
  • Gardening – you can use the shovel to dig up and move most wild plants.
  • Marsh tree stumps can also be dug out with a shovel.
  • Bees no longer drop combat items.

Some more interesting things

Spoiler
  • According to one of the developers, Don't Starve development process began well under way in December 2011. And the idea of the game came, according to information from Wikipedia, during the 48-hour game jam in 2010.
  • The first post about Don't Starve on Klei forums, what I found, is dated May 18, 2012. I didn't found any mention of this game until this date on all web. It’s a pity, but the page itself was not preserved in the web archives.

Ahh ... I have been making this post for 12 hours (seriously) and I really hope that this information will be useful to someone. Thank you, reader, for reaching this point :)
And many thanks to the Klei Entertainment team! Without them, we would never have seen so many wonderful games! :wilson_flower:

Dude thanks! I've been interested in the exact same thing, and I've been researching about the early alpha of don't starve for a while, I have found many of the screenshots and stuff you have posted but there's also so much other stuff on here I really didn't know about! this is great, thanks a lot for this! I'll be digging into this post for a while.

I’m very glad that I helped someone :)

Honestly, I managed to find more information than there is in this post. Maybe I'll somehow create a second post in which I show the remaining information

I've been very interested in the old builds of DS for some time now. How did you manage to find these old versions if I may ask? Did you find a way to downgrade the game far enough through Steam, or did you obtain these old builds through more illegitimate means?

Sadly, I could not get access to old versions other than illegal methods. Because of this, I am not going to distribute these builds anywhere, so as not to violate any rules, sorry.
