Wurt the average

Recommended Posts

I'm not a fan of her and see her more as a challenge character like Warly.

The king mechanic to me is utterly useless. The bonus to maximum stats do not matter and isn't much of a gamechanger in my opinion. And the part where you have to feed a second vegetarian to maintain it, who also doesn't have the same hunger modifier that Wurt has to function on a vegeterian diet just makes it not worth the effort. The initial build cost is also high enough to make it so if you don't have the other players on the server helping you to build it, you probably won't get it done in a reasonable time period and the entire mechanic as a whole just shuts down the moment Winter, the 2nd season in the game freezes all the ponds so you can't fish (at which point your only source of fish is murdering your own merms which also fails since craftsmerms don't respawn in the winter). The best reward for fish trades is getting tentacle spots which are a fairly rare resource but everything else the merm king provides is just not something I find useful. And tentacle spots themselves only gain value to wurt for the purpose of having the guardsmerms which I personally don't use since they are dependent on the king.

To me Wurt's gameplay is largely just living in the swamp, having a birdcage so you can convert the mass amounts of monster meat that the swamp naturally provides to eggs for crockpot filler purposes and then just crafting as many craftsmerms houses as possible to do the labor of deforesting adjacent forest biomes. Moving a bunny hutch (or village) upstairs is also pretty much mandatory as a renewable source of actual vegetables for winter since literally nothing in the swamp naturally supports a vegetarian diet. Which to me also kind of upsets her theme because if she's going to be a vegeterian that depends on bunnymen for survival and finds all merm related structures optional, at that point why even make her a merm? Make her a vegeterian bunnyman character if she doesn't even need merms to survive and cares more about bunnymen.

While I'm not saying merms specifically need a buff you have to admit a few things

-the houses take a stupid amount of effort to make outside of a natural swamp even if it's not hard

-while they're faster at getting resources because of how much easier it is to build other mobs you could them in mass next to a forest you want to chop

-while merms are more tanky very few situations will actually make use of that tanking due to the large gap between boss and mobs and I don't think making merma stronger would be a good solution

Merms are strong mob don't get me wrong but making them wurts main big power seems kinda like a mistake there's not really a good reason to bring mobs on a long trip which is what I feel is what is implied by them never sleeping and yea they are strong when you make a ton of houses but so is making a ton of any mob spiders and hounds waves are the game's earliest clue things are powerful in a horde

That being said I don't hate merms in just don't feel they should be wurt's main payoff.

I do still love wurt but at the end of the day I feel your working towards a goal bigger goal with wurt which what I think draws me to her but at the same time the payoff ok at best you end up with slightly stronger than average mobs who work a bit faster, and a king who's only worthwhile traits at a stat boost and spots. Wurt does make living in the swamp safer  but in the end when everyone's been refreshed with new interesting gameplay aspects is the merm village builder going to grab anyone's attention outside of ppl like me who just like it thematically currently.

I usually build merm village not in the swarm but at the base with other people. They’re pretty good at killing hounds comparing to tooth traps and bunny village (too many people die because of having meats in their inventory). I would be happy with 2 small changes: merms automatically try to save Wurt and people with disguises from attackers and King has more hunger point (triple at least) so feeding him could be a less tedious task. And yeah, merms could auto teleport to their house after 2 days would be great too

I really like the idea of Wurt but I think the design is just off.  She's kinda in the niche of Webber where she is better suited for playing solo than in a team.  Her goals just conflict with everyone else, and her perks are too greedy.

Its probably impossible to change at this point - but why is she a vegetarian exactly?  Amphibians aren't exactly known to be picky eaters.

Strong Grip is a waste - How often do they think I drop tools because I'm wet?  How often do they think I dry off only to grip my tools?  Its not like there is some synergy with wetness we're playing around, she still freezes and bombs sanity...  so why even have this?  How often is she supposed to swing an axe when her primary perk does that for her?  And why can't it work against M/Goose and Bearger?  Is it so OP to not drop tools against these bosses that she has "strong, but not really that strong" grip?

Reading books................................................................................................................................................. ok......................................... when I heard she could read books I was excited she had synergy with Wickerbottom but NOPE.  You don't read books, you "read" them.  What waste.

I was recently thinking about which character would look the most like a pirate to play on a boat base.  Wurt definitely has the look, but then it was like "oh yeah, vegetarian, builds on swamps, I guess I'll pass..."

Well.. there’s also the fact that Klei is designing this game several updates ahead of anything we the players can experience in Beta Stages or even possibly think of in our heads.

So yes.. Maybe Wurts immunity to loosing grip while wet seems useless now, but what if the ocean becomes fully fleshed out with ocean waves and sea enemies? Wurt would then in theory be the best player to use because Wetness from crashing Waves wouldn’t effect her item grip.

You guys really got to think about the Long-Term before you just assume something is useless & disregard it completely.

While I understand later features may change things up one thing I wish they would revert fresh water fishes stacking or at the very least let wurt also use ocean fish for merm houses to make baking outside of the swamp less of a nightmare with her I mean imagine building bee boxes if bees didn't stack.

The conclusion that it’s near worthless is based on experience.

The assumption that the terraforming house builder is secretly an ocean combatant is magical thinking. Taking a flimsy context and taking it a mile too far.

I like wurt. She is a harder character to play as, like Wes, but she is harder in a *more interesting* way. Merms are useful since she cant use pigs for help with chopping trees or getting stones.

Pigs don’t actually mine Stone, unless I am missing some secret here. Only Wurts Merms will mine Both Wood & Stone.

But the thing is wurt isn't hard she just has less options there's tons of food and not being able to eat meat is her main downside infact the early game is easier for her since her bonus hunger perk. The main main method I use for food is usually bunnymen if I'm going short term or stone fruit and planting kelp on the swamp shore harvesting the kelp every few days will usually give 20 to 40 making for a great sanity food.

In my solo Wurt playthrough I was able to solve all my food needs with stone fruits/kelp. I never even interacted with bunnymen

During the early building period you can survive pretty well hoarding all the berry bushes and all the ice you can find during the first winter, basically making the one berry-3 ice jam (or 3 eggs if you find too much meat).

Once you find the lunar island you need to have "at least" 10 stone bushes to survive, hire your merms, and keep progressing. Some kelp to manage your sanity helps too although its not mandatory. Once you reach the 20 fighter merms count you are all set to murder everything that moves on the surface, I managed to get to that point by late summer/early second autumn, but I'm sure it can be done faster. Then I started the same grind (only a lot faster, took me only half a season) on the caves, and cleared the ruins with merms.

It's a different kind of gameplay, I enjoyed it.

Something being easy or hard is subjective. You may find other characters harder but I feel like Wurt is harder then other characters. This is just my opinion and you may disagree.

At the end of the day I feel like wurt needs a perk she can use in her day to day not anchored to the swamp because even the ones that aren't very useful or impactful I think it's the lack of impactful abilities thats a big turn off for her tho for me personally I feel something that really  hurt her was the massive nerf that was hook line and sinker
