Is there a way to know when a beefalo is starving/going to starve soon?

It farts at >80% but keeping it at that level seems like a waste. Also encourages it to become Peggy.

I also do not understand the pattern of it asking for food (when does it decide to run towards you and open its mouth?).

If you've got no pressing distractions, feed him every time he opens his mouth. Stop when he doesn't. If you've done this at least once a day, you're fine.

If you can't be bothered, put up a salt lick and park him by it until you're ready again.

Following you with an open mouth: Hungry (less than 75)

Behaving normal : you gave him enough food
If the beefalo farts, stop giving him food (reached 300)

Beefalos have a wooping 375 max hunger and they lose 300 each day

yea I watch both james's and beard's videos on taming it. I managed to tame with the UI mod that shows you stats of everything but then turned it off and it became confusing.

Also you don't need to feed the beefalo while you are riding it, often when I start taming one early I just stick a saddle on one and stay on the thing until it's tamed, only feeding it something like twigs or light bulbs until it lets me back on.
