Here's what's all obvious by what we have in the game:

Thulecite has its origins in the RoG continent, but it seems between the time of Them and the time we are playing at, an ancient pig civilization went down to the continent, explored the ruins and brought back with them Thulecite and Thulecite equipment, which is why we find these things inside Hamlet ruins.

Here's what can be easily inferred:

It seems they also brought nightmare fuel. And it seems they brought something even worse of powerful fuel magic that now rests at the bottom of the End's Well.

That makes sense.

while something might be one way in the game, in the lore it might be quite different.

Yes. Another example of this is how the ancient gateway resets the cave in-game, but lore-wise it actually takes the survivors into The Forge, then The Gorge and so on, like we can see it in The Forge video.

I mean, to be fair, Krampus has soulless white eyes in-game, whereas in old versions of DS and the video he has the yellow eyes.

He's soulless, but alive.

Poor Kramps.

But wait, does that mean Wendy and Willow have no souls either?
