Because this was an ongoing process, the carbon dioxide was pushed away, if it was too low in pressure. Just a few chunks of polluted oxygen around and it will convert nearby heavier gas into the lighter one. Might be what happened here. Doesn't look like it in the source. It says "safe elements: CO2". It only list slime as something it consumes.
