What's the odds of this happening?

Recommended Posts

I was quite infuriated as I couldn't find the steam vent - I was even considering using oil to generate water.

And then this happened..

Yeah. Double. And these two even give the polluted water at the same rate.

I'm wondering, is this actually a common occurrence?

I've had that happen before.  My current seed has two water geysers that have the same output. The "randomization" is anchored in placement within a grid.  There's a post somewhere that elaborates on that in great detail, but I can't find it now.  Anyway, the output material and rate is determined by the geyser's random location, but that location is also within a grid that repeats across the map.

I have the same thing, both cool steam and two slush are right above the starter biome All four grouped together.

Also has a copper, an oil well right beside a hot water geyser, a gold, another slush, a chlorine, and NG.

Thanks, I think I am going to save this seed for the release. That is if the geysers/vents are still the same. Going to test that on a few other seeds first.

You presented one game. It happened. That makes it 1 out of 1, or 100% chance based on your survey :p

And when you do a statistical test for that, all available methods will tell you that you need a bigger sample. So your 100% assumption cannot even be disproved statistically!

Only talking about the geysers. They may or may not be the same.

That's kind of the point.  Every time they make any changes to world-gen, it breaks all map seeds created prior to the change in world-gen.  Not only will the map itself have a different layout and different placement of features, but the PoI features will also be different.  They will be placed in the same locations, but they may be a different Geyser feature -- for example, your guaranteed Cool Steam Vent in the Caustic Biome will be at a different location, and you instead get a Minor Volcano in that location.  Or, it could be the locked Morb/Vacillator PoI.

Ok, good to know. It really depends on how they do it internally, but if that is the observation, then seeds from before become mostly worthless.

Mostly worthless? Probably completely worthless. All the previous map gen changes have resulted in completely new maps, geyser distribution, POI placements, etc.

There are different ways to do this. But if it is done as you say, then it is indeed worthless.

I love this seed and this is the second base I've played on it.  I'm really hoping they stay the same but history doesn't really support that.  When they add new biomes, it ends up with new geyser placement.
