If ever we have evidence that nightmare fuel gave life to the mechanical creatures: they come alive sometimes under Nightmare Cycle.. drop NF when killed Now, I think Wagstaff is just surprised to see WX: - sitting on the throne at all - experiencing fear like a sentient being. as for WX... he probably existed before as an automaton in the voxola factory and got sucked into the portal in the Wagstaff - Winona - Voxola incident.. and gained consciousness via Nightmare Cycle... In normal Don't Starve Constant in "robot" gender is only WX, but when we will look in to Constant file in DLCs we can see more characaters as "robot" (RoG - 2 | SW - 3 | HAM - 4). So for me adding other characters in this gender in DLCs constants files have no sense now when they have male quotes. Maybe Klei is too lazy for doing special quotes and fix genders or they just dont want to do this and make lore in singleplayer when they are focus on multiplayer Still we can suppose that Wagstaff know who/what is WX and WX had to be the research probe but during the "pull in" to the constant he came to life. He was most probably an automaton (no consciousness) then was imbued with "life" tanks to Nightmare Cycle - Wagstaff gets to Vanilla - Adventure mode - In that example Wagstaff find WX in the throne and says this...
