Hello guys! (•ω•)

It’s kind of dumb that we cannot cultivate tall trees on our asteroid. And even cannot find some form space missions.

For a long time (already one year ago something) requesting tall trees, still, I can see no trees (except the fancy ugly mealwood, but for me it doesn’t counts because it’s not tall enough).

Well then, I’ll just introduce my idea again.

 

1. Introduction to my trees idea - General charactics of trees.

Ok trees. I do mean the tall one but not the mealwood that is short as brushes.

Here are my general idea of the tree type plants.

 

A tree,

Uptakes 2w×5h space.

Need exactly two flat tiles to grow on.

Takes a long time to grow, but it’s yield time interval is short as normal plants.

Harvesting the tree won’t reset its Growth Cycle, but its Yield Cycle.

Uproot a grown tree (i.e, it finished its growth cycle) yields logs.

2. My ideas of trees.

2.1 Mealhive

So this is generally a larger version of Mealwood, but that is not simply a tree - It’s also a lice hive.

Growth cycle:

6 cycles

 

Yield cycle:

Every 3 cycles per yield (cultivated)

Every 6 cycles per yield (wild growth)

 

Producing 1900 Cal Meal lice and a mealwood seed.

With 10% base chance of mealhive seed.

 

Uproot Value:

1000 Cal Meal lice

3 logs

1 mealhive seed

 

Fertilizer:

35g dirt /cycle

 

Atmospheric requirments:

Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Polluted Oxygen

Gas pressure 300g to 10kg

 

Decor:

Ugly as mealwood... -10 (2 tiles)

 

Miscellaneous:

When it is eaten by Drecko, it pushes the growth cycle back by 33.33%. Means, a fully grown Mealhive equals to three proportions of Drecko’s diet.

 

2.2 Bubble Bamboo

So you want something Caribbean or Asian? This can be a good choice!

It is a decorative tree, but takes part in minor oxygen production.

Growth cycle:

8 cycles

 

Uproot value:

2 Bamboo (a log varient with more decor boost),

1 Bamboo Shoot (2 if fully grown)

 

Irrigation:

40g water /cycle, absorbed from the surroundings or from pipes.

 

Atmospheric requirements:

Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Polluted Oxygen, Water, Polluted Water

Gas pressure 150-10000g

At least one tile must be flooded with water if grown wild.

 

Decor:

+35 (6 tiles)

 

Miscellaneous:

• Duplicants inside its decor range also recieves a destress buff ‘zenith effect’ (stress -60% /cycle)

• Generates 100g oxygen /cycle, until the gas pressure of 2kg is reached when bathed in light.

• It’s dimension is 1w × 4h, which is different from other trees.

• You are allowed to plant it in hydroponic tiles and farm tiles but not for planter boxes.

 

2.3 Furry Oak

This gives another choice for fabrics: Cotton.

Growth cycle:

8 cycles

 

Yield cycle:

Every 8 cycles per yield (cultivated)

Every 16 cycles per yield (wild growth)

 

Producing 6 cotton (fabrics that has more decor bonus)

With 10% base chance of Furry Oak seed.

 

Uproot Value:

4 Logs,

1 Furry Oak seed

 

Fertilizer:

Phosphorite 50g /cycle

 

Atmospheric requirments:

Oxygen, Carbon Dioxide, Polluted Oxygen

Gas pressure 300g to 10kg

 

Decor:

+30 (2 tiles)

 

3. Trees cultivation.

Spoiler

Trees cultivation will need you another type of hydroponic tile - Forestry tile, or, large hydroponics tile. Dimension 2w × 1h.

It is for growing trees, but if you want to grow ordinery plants, welcome. But must be grown in group of three.

Like hydroponic tiles, it has a liquid pipe input slot for irrigation.

4. Uses of Logs.

Spoiler

It can be used as a decorative material or an insulator.

 

Such as, used in painting canvas, or  wooden scultpure.

Or plank floor tiles.

Or burn it into fine charcoal (actually coal).

Or even for something more insane - wooden rockets...

 

Any more uses?

I think it is up to our imagination.

I accept the truth of biodiversity!
Wood as material could be a nice addition, to build torture chambers (for example).
Wooden gravestones could be a very useful early game addition to handle the dead dupes.
Perhaps gravestones could be designed by the gravestone designer (new job).
Resin from trees could be used to craft candles, by the candle crafter (new job), to handle the darkness with comfort.

I`d like a bamboo tree. Bamboo is thin and tall so would fit a regular farm tile and grow lets say 5 tiles up. It could provide a nice construction material with low thermal conductivity. Would be a repalcement for raw minerals but couldn`t be crushed for sand. Might be an ingredient for some medicine as well. Should serve as food for sage hatches.

I was thinking this the other day! Everything we have so far is bush-height (except for pincha peppers, but they're upside down so they don't count as trees).

 

I've also thought ... I think I made a suggestion a while back that it would be nice if dupes produced more CO2 and we had more options for reconverting the CO2 to O2. That way they're not just deleting bunches of matter via breathing. There could be some fun challenges with that. Maybe one or two types of tree could help.

That spoiler about the first tree ever in ONI.

I remember part of the official description is its fruit emits hydrogen.

And it grows in chlorine gas.

I think Giant Prianha Plant would fit...

But it’s a good idea to make some plants aggressive species.

I remember in Klei’s database we have something like SPACE PIRATES for this game.

But not yet implemented, surely the devs hold it?

In reality, industries usually uses carbon from charcoal rather than extract from coal.

Like what I said. Use trees to burn charcoal.

Oh rubber trees! That’s also a good idea too.

But not sure whether rubber is useful in ONI.
