There was a study done, any time the H word was mentioned in a forum thread, the conversation was over.

Well, my country suffered the most from his actions during WWII and now basically to cope with it we are just in most cases making laugh at him. There was already too much crying, laugh is only thing left to not go mad.

If my joke was inappropriate than I'm sorry.

Facts change over time, the study was done over 10 years ago, it was on QI.  Another episode points out that facts have a lifespan, while a fact maybe true at one time, it may not be true at a later date.

QI also had a fact that days weren't 24 hours long and were instead 23 hours and 59 minutes long.

Don't trust the people who can't count from a 0 start :p

This sounds like Orwellian "1984". Do you actually really believe this or I missed some joke here?

I don't think it is facts changing but rathers people perception of them. And it is a very dangerous thing.

Imagine that in 50 years people will start to believe that WW II never happened, and they will thnk "Why no go to war with those who oppose us?! What can go wrong?!".

Fact: There are only 1 million humans alive.

False, you might say. But at some point it was true (for a given value of human at least).

Very aptly put, thank you :D

Not so long ago, I mentioned to someone that heavier things fall at the same rate as lighter things, to which the reply was sheer shock and disbelief and tried to argue that heavier things fall faster....

Yes, this really happened and not by a thick person either, an accountant with a first class honours degree from a reputable university...

Doesn't such statement mean what is in the moment when this statement is made? If you don't precise what time you are talking about than how this can be a fact related to past?

That is the whole point. A fact is confined to its reference frame. Change the reference frame and it might not be a fact anymore.

Do you time stamp every conversation you have?

Agreed.  I would also propose perspective, but this could be considered time frame according to some special relative case proposed somewhere, sometime.

Exactly. So it is still a fact that in 1999 there was 6 billion people. And another fact is that now we have more than 7 billion. The first fact hasn't changed.

Again, we could potentially be talking different reference frame. Objects fall a the same rate independent of mass in a vacuum as demonstrated by commander David Scott of the Apollo 15 when he did his famous hammer and feather drop on the Moon.

However, anyone can demonstrate that on Earth in atmospheric air, ie. a different reference frame, a volleyball and a bowling ball of the same size fall at different rates.

Or you can go full Einsteinian and rightfully claim that neither the bowling ball or volleyball is actually falling but it's the Earth that is accelerating towards them.

When I've got my head down, praying to the porcelain god in the lavatory black hole, I don't want anything to do with the universe and certainly don't want to be an observer.....

Well, you can't have a topic with the word black hole in the title and not mention Einstein and reference frames, now can you?

Given we're in a universe that is expanding away from a set pint, that's not exactly right.

No. The Universe isn't expanding from a set point. It is the set point that is expanding, and that set point is the Universe.

To say that the Universe from a set point would imply it's expanding into something. And we have no way of knowing whether that is case. We can only see it from our perspective

Any object that expands, does so away from it's centre. That centre doesn't change or move (relative to the object of course). This includes things like "a universe".

But that would require size of the universe to be infinite and I don't think that current scientific knowledge can confirm it.
