Ease of travel. In my current running world I gotta go around a pool of water to get anywhere which takes quite a bit of time, so I put a raft in the pool so I could cut between two chunks of land quickly. It's literally nearly touching. I'm only on the boat for a second or two. I forgot it's name, but it's "something Canoo". It's white, and looks like a bowl. This way we could also have some river streams in towns as well.
