Farm Station

Recommended Posts

Alright help me out here because I keep hearing different things on if the farm station works on x.

  1. Does the farm station work for every crop?
  2. Does it always half the resources needed (water/slime/dirt) by speeding up the growth times two?
  3. Does the amount of crops in your greenhouse matter how much fertilizer is used?
  4. Is it more efficient to use a farm station for a sleet wheat farm if you care about preserving dirt?
  5. Is there a cool down on how many times you can apply farmers touch?
  6. Can you 100% automate the station with auto-sweepers?

And feel free to share whatever small details you know about the farm station as well.

I tend to not use it without really any problems but I am mostly curious about using it to preserve dirt with my sleet wheat farm.

Appreciate it! ;)

I use it exclusively to save slime. Building serviceable fertiliser synths is its own minigame... needs dupe access or conveyor, but emits natural gas.

1) some say not for mealwood

2) yes, but costs 5k fertiliser, made from phosphorite+dirt+pW.

3) no, but kind of, If you have a very low station-crop ratio, you might not be able to generate enough micronutrient to Buff all plants. I have 4 stations for about 100 mushrooms. I have about 85% coverage.

4) yes. And water.

5) 1 per cycle

6) no, only dupes with farmer job can apply the Buff. All dupes can harvest plants. Sweeper can fertilise with dirt & collect harvested seeds, but not apply Farmers Buff.

It works on all food crops except Mealwood.  I am unsure if it works on non-food crops (Thimble Reed, Balm Lily, Gas Grass).

Yes.  While the Farmer's Touch buff is applied, the plant will grow at double speed while it's consumption remains unchanged.

Indirectly, yes.  The Fertilizer cost to make a single unit of Farmer's Touch does not change, but you will have more plants that are in need of it, and as a result will be spending more Fertilizer to make enough of it to buff all your plants with it.

As with #2, yes.  The plant will grow at double speed, but will not change it's resource consumption.

It can only be applied if it is not currently active.  Once applied, it will last for 1 full cycle.  It can be produced continuously from the Farm Station.

Sadly, no.  Auto-sweepers can only be used to transport the Fertilizer in, and the Farmer's Touch out.  They are not able to actually make it at the Farm Station, nor can they apply it to the plants.  You must have a Dupe who is either currently assigned to, or has previously mastered, the Job of Farmer.

To get 100% coverage you have to get every farm tile the buff per cycle.

There are many things to consider like distance from station, farmer travel time, and farmer level.

For me I try to get the station as close to the middle of the greenhouse as possible for max coverage.  Also have 2 farmers will also speed up coverage (one to work the station and one to apply the buff)

Most of my greenhouse designs are 32x3.  Farmer's station in the middle with 15 farm tiles on each side.

FYI the buff does work on thimble reed and balm Lilly.  Don't know about gas grass but I think it does.

Mealwood is the only crop it doesn't work on.

So are they still worth using now that fertilizer makers need more than just polluted water?

Yes, the dirt and phosphorite requirements are low enough to be worth it

However the natural gas they emit is so low it's more of an annoying waste product than a reliable fuel source

I usually build my fertilizer synthesizers in the same room as natural gas vents

A related question:  Is there any benefit to setting up a greenhouse if deactivate the farm station?

At the moment, no.  The station just lets the farmer's touch be created and applied to the crops.

However, and it's just my opinion, I think that eventually things will be changed so that the stations/room designation

will have some passive effect.  I also think that the (minor cheese) allowance for the stations (both farm and grooming)

to function outside of an actual farm/ranch room will be removed.

there are rumors that it improves seed drop rate but that has not been confirmed

It's also in the tooltip on the Room overlay, describing the Greenhouse.  Whether that attribute is connected or not in the code is the question.

[Edit]  Went and checked again, it is no longer in the tooltip.  Where it used to refer to seed chance, it now refers to plant growth instead.  I have no way of knowing when that changed, sadly.

Thank you everyone for the comments and information.

This is my current setup:

Can you automate it further?

Not sure if you can put the fertilizer automatically in the farm station?

Also looking at this, could you have a farm station in your farms for the room bonus only but produce the Micronutrient Fertilizer somewhere different?

You can see a bit laying on the ground there so it might work...

And once you made the Micronutrient Fertilizer can auto-sweepers deliver it to your crops?

Appreciate it, little short on time currently otherwise I would test it myself. ;)

You can use a sweeper to add fertilizer to a farm station

Sweepers won't deliver micronutrients to crops

Farmer's can bring micronutrients from stations in other greenhouses to different greenhouses.  But this uses a lot of dupe time so avoid that.

Thank you!

So I guess you could set up a central Micronutrient Fertilizer maker. And ship it from there to all your greenhouses using auto-sweepers.

But duplicants would still have to manually add it to the farm tiles and you would still need a greenhouse in your farm for the fertilizer to work!?
