If I'm close enough to the surface to hear explosions...

Recommended Posts

As in the title, if I'm hearing explosions is the surface getting nuked by meteors?

I told myself this time I was going to resist digging upward and then one of the worst mapgen failures ever forced me to repair an ice biome, up from the start about 2 screens.

Now I'm hearing meteors.

They start at the beginning of the game instead of when you breach the surface, I really don't understand why
They said that they'll start when you breach the surface but after like 6 cycles I think they start raining down even if you don't come close to the surface(which you wouldn't do in the first 6 cycles)

They start either from the start of the game or when you get close to the surface (like one screen away). Probably the latter but i`m still not sure. In my recent base after 300 cycles the abyssalite layer of the top biomes was barely scratched (althrough it endured a few hits it seemed). If that`s the rate at which the destruction happens then it`s not that scary. The issue is if by random luck meteros manage to breach a biome early. The hot regolith from the top of the world carries so much heat energy it will vaporize most biomes in little time.

The meteors aren`t breaking tiles too fast and with each hit they build up regolith on top which helps protect them. People like to rush for steel but simple 2-3 layers of granite at the top of endangered biomes will buy you a lot of time and it won`t need you to brech the surface either. all you need is to get to the top biomes early enough before the destruction happens.

It gets worse if it breaches a cold biome, as the entire thing turns into one, big tsunami.

If you want to protect your asteroid and you don't have enough steel, build instead steam engine or solar panels. They are destroyed but after the asteroids smash on them preventing the distruction of your surface until you will have enough steel to cover all the surface. The regolith problem remain....

they only get damaged, never destroyed.

Also the rocket can pass them without demolishing them, making them the superior choice to bunker doors. This is most likely a bug that will be fixed, but ye.

Correct, but you will prevent the destruction of what you want to destroy later...And is a little better then using sandbox mode for creating the steel barrier....

It seems like the area needs to be at least revealed; those saying they always start on cycle 1 are probably revealing the map in debug on cycle 1, triggering the showers.  I just revealed the map to check on a ~300 cycle base (rocketry upgrade preview) and there wasn't a single indication of meteor impact on the gravitas building's roof.

My previous 1600 cycle game has been started in development build of CU, continued in EU... so the meteor shower started at cycle 1

Now I started a new game in development RU... I will load a old save and see whit sand box mode if you are right or not.

Post edit:

At cycle 126 as you see in the gravitas facility meteor shower started at cycle 1... sow you are wrong... sow i will rush the steel production to prevent the disaster.

I just generated a new map, seed 0, in the latest update.

I let it sit for ~14 cycles with just enough digging to survive. No debug mode, sandbox, or other trickery as of yet, just generated (impervious / unflappable / no stress / oxygenarian) and let run on x3.

Pause and save, then alt-s to take a screenshot:

No debug has been used as of yet.

Now, still in pause mode, turn on debug and scroll up to the surface:

Clear evidence of meteor impacts on the monument.

However, if I scroll down a little and look:

CmwwTyk.jpg

Here's a dreco still in the process of falling after its initial spawn. Elsewhere (not pictured) there's e.g. clear large temperature differentials and sleet wheat still in the dropping animation.

So the surface has not yet been revealed. And yet there's meteor damage.

Please do not assume the worst of others before at least testing your hypothesis.

The Hero we need but don't deserve.

I agree. The meteor showers start way before space breach. Maybe its random which explains why some people find their surface intact.

Klei should make this consistent. Meteor showers should only start after 'space breach' event which is also indicated by a pop-up message. Better yet, make it start on 'space breach' or Cycle 500, whichever is earlier. Boom. Now you have to work on a timer.

The gravitas Facility does not seem to be there until you reveal it. But the meteor-showers start at beginning of the game.

So if they actually always start at cycle 1 then the progress in breaking the top layers of the map si slow enough that you`ll won`t have problems 300 cycles in. Just keep in mind it`s random and you might get an unlucky asteroid hit that breaches the biome, but from my experiences the top biomes are safe for a long time (as for EU).

I think if you do not want to lose top biomes (and there may just be a large ice one in there), you should go to the surface and check on things no later than cycle 300 or so. Having a ton of hot Regolith in there really kills ice biomes.
