Thoughts about expressive update

Recommended Posts

What do you guys think about the new update ?

I'm having way too much troubles managing stress early on ...

The previous system was clearly too easy, but this one feels like you must build your base in ONE specific order if you don't want your dupes to become crazy ...

My rooms are cleared, i built the starting rooms early on (toilets, barracks, mess room, recreational) and my scientist is just becoming crazy (i mean she is TIER 1 scientist, not even 2 ... )

I kinda feel like not playing the game for some time tbh ...

I find myself a bit upset as well. I have a very nice base on cycle 180 or so, using the Big Freeze A mapgen. It ran just fine on cosmic upgrade, max speed was a little jerky, but tolerable. Now the map is unplayable bc fps is at 1 or so. I'll be headed over to that thread in a bit to poke the bear.

This massive slow down shows up on a fresh map using that mapgen. The new map i made using default mapgen seems slightly slower than I recall as well, it makes me worried that I'll never be able to run a large base at max speed again. I'm not sure where the bottleneck even at, my cpu, gpu and hard drive are nowhere near maxed out.

I'll be starting a new colony on the default mapgen to see how much of a hit my fps will be taking, I'll be back to comment at a later date about the updates content.

I'm playing with a big base right now and I'm at 30 fps+ almost all the time, except when I display the liquid or gas overlay. It is not as fast as it was on previous release but it is more than 1fps.

To manage a Tier 2 morale (+4), it is actually easy: Here are the bonuses needed

  • Being a duplicant +1
  • Sleeping in a barrack (normal bed) +1
  • Using a latrine (closed room with outhouse and wash basin) +1
  • Using a mess hall +3
  • Having a recreation room with a water cooler (no power involved) +1 (when the duplicant have time to use the machine)

It does not count the food or the decor at all in this and you can have +7, which is above the Tier 2 requirements. With mushrooms, you get another +1, reaching Tier 3 already. With paintings in mess hall, in barracks and in the recreation room, you may even get another +1/+2.

Going above 12 begins to be tricky with more power, art and rooms involved but until Tier 4, it is manageable. Worst case, you have one massage table ready for the cases where one duplicant start acting wierd. And by the way, during the few cycles after a new duplicant arrive, the people there get a 10% stress buff. So unless you stop pretty early getting new duplicants, it helps a lot.

Great Hall is easy to build and give +6 morale, so you can get tier 3 (morale +8) that is needed for abyssalite mining trait ;). I'm in cycle 20 with moral +11 (I need more deco :( )

I've found no real difference on miserable difficulty compared to CU with regards to stress.

If there's anything that really changed it's that you don't promote your dupes until you get enough morale boosting to safely do so.  High quality food also has a purpose when before it didn't really have one, so pepper farms are sure to be more commonplace to create pepper bread and coffee to keep all tier 6 dupes happy.

Time to give them all a caffeine addiction.

I really don't understand why people have problems with stress in EU. Growing their colonies too fast, maybe?

Just for reference, I am at cycle 40 with 3 dupes and all are at stress 0%.

Cycle 35, 12 dupes, 10% or less.  It's not impossible and you can still dupe most of the time.

I somehow seem to be struggling, cycle 12 dupes have their first jobs and are freaking out XD I do not have a mess hall yet though so that might help

First job should only require outhouse/basin, bedroom, being a dupe, and some time at the printing pod.  What seems to be your trouble?

Exactly. In beta, I also made good experience with having one dupe with "sunny disposition" for some high-level jobs like analyzing geysers.

I like to do it with less dupes (did not have more than 12 in any game since start of the year), but good to know you can still do it.
