[Suggestion] Stirling Engines for Mechanical Work or Electric Power Generation

Stirling Engines are a heat engine that functions by alternately heating and cooling gasses to produce mechanical work.

These would be a natural choice for ONI, since the only input to the engine is heat energy.  

Efficiency for a Stirling Engine comes from keeping one part of the engine hot, while cooling off the condenser part.  This creates a natural limiting factor in how much energy the engine can produce.  This should be good for a mid to late game electric generator, that only requires a heat source and a cold source.

Then we need refined metal pumps that can handle higher temperatures. A RL molten salt reactor's pumps can handle pumping 600-800C+ coolant...

Well, the game mechanics don't have to match the real world mechanics (assuming that's where you got the numbers).

Challenges for this sort of thing are the fun of this game!  :)

Part of the fun of the game is the challenges involved.  Can you imagine the sort of heating/cooling setups people would be using for this?  Large amounts of piping in the cold biome for one side of the of the engine, with large amounts of magma piping for the other!

Nein Nein Nein. People would put the hot side in liquid gold from volcanoes for cooling and vacuum on the other side as the game treats vacuum as 0K. Also, vacuum have the same heat conduction properties as neuronium so vacuum would be like a infinite heat sink/generator like people using tempshifts to inject heat into neuronium for turbines...

Maybe if the generator had 4 gas or fluid connections (coolant in/out, heat source in/out), that way you'd still have to pump the elements somehow so you can't just use magma for instance. Could also be modeled as a Peltier element, basically a solid-state device that directly produces voltage when one side is heated and one cooled.

What I really like about this idea is that we could get some extra power where we might normally use a cooling loop. Hm....

I agree, its a very simple concept that would fit right in. It would also be overpowered as ****, because heat is the most abundant thing in ONI. Unless you made the completely unwieldy and hard to build, like steam turbines (who cares about those) there would be no stopping anyone from building huge banks of stirling engines for unlimited power. Like, um, old school natg+fertilizer plants.

I know this is cruel, but power in ONI has to be at a premium. Not something you get from kicking rocks from A to B, where at B you have a magic plate that converts the kinetic energy from a rock into 10 KW of power  :/

The solution for asteroid global warming, couldnt go wrong with that one. But now we can just vent **** into space :/

i am still torn about heat in this game, is there too much or too little.

My first instinct was that getting cold would be the problem. Now, I just am not sure. I do know that internally heat can become a problem. But, large, basic, mechanical structures, objects, things, concepts are reasonable in this game. And It is a huge dynamic field to work in. They have superb modeling. It's like the best lava lamp ever.

Overpowering in a game is a matter of balance.  The balance of utility in the game is determined by how much electric power the Sterling engine could make.  If it only made 1000 kW, for example, you'd need so many to power the base that the area needed to support it would be come a limiting factor in making use of it.

I am sure you are god if you can use all 1000kW

I suppose I do mean W instead of kW.  I just remembered the wrong unit.
