This is a simple concept for a door which is a Star-Trek style glowing force field, impermeable to all gasses, but which allows unobstructed Dupe movement right through it without any opening/closing delay.  Functionally this will be much like an petroleum stacked liquid airlock BUT with less tediousness, a proper place in the tech tree and most importantly balanced due to it's power consumption which I expect to be in the range of 100 to 300 W. 

The structure would actually be a 1x1 directional 'emitter' which requires a mate pointing at it and the force field is created between them, power consumption likely scaling for longer distances.  Solid objects, dupes and liquids pass through, unless it is deactivated by control wire then it becomes impassable to everything and its power consumption would at least double.  To actually turn it off you need to cut power to it and then the field will drop.

Force fields by default allow light to pass through. If kept at the surface biome, it'll allow unfettered solar power generation.

So can be used instead of bunker doors. Of course ... if it consumes 100-200W per cell it'll nerf solar generation completely

But Force Field door will be an instant open and instant close door. Will help duplicant movement considerably.

Not that it means much, but flavor wise it does seem a bit higher sc fi tech compared to most of the thing you see researched by your duplicants . Maybe it could be a tech you recuperate in ruins similar to the thermo nullifier rathe than researched ?

We have an AETN, A printing pod. We only start on the low end. Look at their tools. I am sure they have spaceship technology etc as well

The AETN is found in the ruins, hence why I suggested that somethign as advnced as a foce field be found there as well

As for thetols, ike the ods it's somthing that is given to the duplcants from the start, no that the duplicant devellop themselves. Also , speaking of the printing pod, well...  looking a the ,Data mining thread and all the usused (yet ?) art asets they recently uncovered well...

Awfully looks like a monitor you'd find in the ruins, don't you think ? So possibly not unrelated.

 

A force field wont need to consume power all the time. 

You need energy to build the field. Once established and stabilized its done. The energy is in place. The energy needed to keep it is minimal. (its limited to the circuits resistance). 

When something hits the field, it consumes energy to restabilize. As long as its left alone, it would consume just a few watts of energy.

Thats what i said... in vacuum, its fine. When air or liquid (or critters) hit it > Power consumption.

edit: have the alt-mode be impervious to liquids but still allow dupes to pass through.

You should look at CO2 locks.  They can keep two atmospheres completely separate without having exosuits.  But you can't make a vacuum with it.

In Star Trek, they have forcefields that keep the oxygen in, but shuttles can still fly out.  I think this is more due to the fact that they have forcefields that they can open just a part of, so they just make a hole that barely fits the shuttle.  Either that, or it's like a bubble soap covered object going through a bubble soap wall.  It just goes through without breaching it.  I don't know how Star Trek force fields work.

Yes that ability for the shuttle to go through without letting out the air is what I was looking for.  I believe the technobabble is that the shuttle has to push with enough force to get through, but air pressure is insufficient to get through.  Normally people can't go through Trek force fields, but this is where I depart for the sake of game play..

I'm saying that all solids and liquids pass through, but gasses up to any pressure are held in.  This lets you do many interesting things like put a force field over some magma and let water pour in and then trap the high pressure steam.
