How do eggs work in the new branch?

Recommended Posts

It looks like we can store them in compactors now?  Do they HAVE to be incubated now to hatch?  I'm just wondering cause I used to have a  meat facility where the eggs would sit in the fridges and then hatch and then get turned into meat.  But it sounds like that's out now, because they won't hatch if they stay in storage, and instead degrade?  Anybody figure out how this works yet?

Thanks!

from what i noticed is that eggs pretty much 'behave' like they used to. the 2 main differences now are :

- each kind of egg now has its own mass and energyvalue therefore no more 1 to 1 omelette cooking for all eggs

- eggs have to be cracked open before using them for food first. this was made so we have actual control on which eggs can be used for cooking. if you want to keep a set amount of eggs safe you gotta be creative though (like storing the eggs out of reach of the dupes and dropping the hatched critter into the stable via automation.

Before you could store eggs in ration boxes. Which allowed them to hatch. Now you can no longer do that but store them in compactors.

This will completely stop their incubation process and start to become rough (raw?) eggs over time. Before they become a mere cooking incredient you can just eject the eggs from the compactor and resume their incubation on the floor (5% progress per cycle).

The other routes are:

Egg Cracker: instant cooking ingredient

Incubator: up to 25% progress per cycle, but must be serenaded by a dupe every once in a while (for the additional 20%)

There also seems to be a bug with the incubator, which keeps the babies trapped in it after hatching.

Have you actually gotten this to work like that? That is what I assumed the egg cracker would do but in my experience all I can get to happen is dupes will load 3 of the selected egg into the cracker, it will lock into an errand pending state and the eggs just slowly lose viability in the cracker turning into raw eggs. Never once been able to get a duplicant to actually manually crack an egg.

Sounds like their intentions of making it easier made it harder.  I was able to keep a very stable system going with one fridge with a low count for each type of egg I wanted to buffer in a room and the excess would be shipped out to be cooked or hatch/killed.

I won't be able to keep any buffer eggs around now.  I guess I'll need a normal breeding room where eggs get dropped in and wrangled out to the rooms that need them.  Might work.  If they make the incubators have a repeat function like cooking that might work too.

Oof.  Do we have a way to empty storage with automation yet?  Cause that's fine if they just incubate on the ground, but I used to ship them to my meat plant and then store them in a fridge.  Is there a way to have the endpoint of shipping just drop to the ground?

You can set up a not with 2 buffers to make an egg dropping sweeper.  It isn't left on long enough to move the egg to whatever higher priority target and then the egg gets dropped out of range.  3 seconds of the on time seems to be right.

I don't think it is a bug but another change they made and it wasn't really explained. Once the baby is born, it will wait for the Rancher to deliver it to a vacant Stable. I noticed that once I saw a Racher straight up put the baby inside a bag and deliver it to a stable. (The incubator was outside of the stable)
