Sandstone available, but cannot access or build with it

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I have run into a problem I have never had before.  I am using the most recent development version.

I have 6.5 tons of sandstone available.  I collected it into a storage container.

Then I suddenly noticed that I could not build ladders, floors, etc any more.  Or even designate them.

I removed the 6.5 t of sandstone from the storage container.  It is sitting on the floor.  No other dig or build tasks assigned.

All items requiring sandstone remain greyed out.   I can click on the location and it reports 6.5 tons of sandstone, but the display in the upper right shows no sandstone available.

I then went back a few saves and even then I can see a discrepancy between the amount of sandstone available in storage and when the upper right-hand display says is available.

I have never encountered this before.

Any ideas?

Select any dupe, then command "move to", check using this whether route to your sandstone reachable or not. After that check using same way to anything you want to build. If they can move to both location but still not building, post some pics or upload your save file.

Hi all,

So I went back a few saves again and I was watching carefully.  I have 8.9 tons of Sandstone, and then in an instant it suddenly shows that I have 0 tons of sandstone. (upper right hand corner display) .  Then it suddenly become available again and I am now up to 40 tons.  There was no blockage.  Same ladders available.

I am really confused by these wild fluctuations.

The amount available should have nothing to do with the dupes or with their access to it.  I should be able to designate as much building as I  have material available.  If the dupes can't reach the area to do the work - then that is a separate issue.

There is something new afoot here because I have been playing regularly and consistently up until right before ranching, then I was traveling for work, then I returned to the game and am seeing this behavior yet I am doing the same things I used to.

Did access to resources, etc. get changed?

post a picture. it may be that a dupe can't reach it.

It is not that they cannot reach it, it is that I cannot even designate a build because there is no sandstone available, despite there being some in a storage containter that the dupes continually walk past.

Again, whether or not a dupe can reach the sandstone (which they certainly could),  the amount available should not fluctuate between 8 tons to 0 tons to 40 tons.

So, my guess is you're currently building a floor or something else that is digging out 2+ tiles, and your dupes are coming into the build from one side, and have to complete the 'jump' tile before they can get at the materials for a next one.  It's a common problem to have if supplies are on one side and the bridge isn't built yet.

You say that there's a storage container that the dupes continuously walk past, and there's enough in the container.  That is not normal results, which is why a picture, or even a save file, would be more helpful in trying to figure out why you're running into trouble.  The containers haven't had any changes, nor have standard work components, for a while so either you have a significant exception or there's a particular piece of logic we don't understand you're running into yet.

Access to the material has always been a factor in calculating availability of resources.

Lock all your food in a room so the dupes can't access it. 0kcal will be available and you will get food shortage warning.

You really should post a picture / save for diagnosis. If you feel 100% confident that you have not misread the situation then file a bug report.

Okay.  I will post a save game as soon as I can.  I will revert to the save and watch more carefully.  I am just surprised that for all my hours in game I have never run across of noticed this before.

Hi All,

Please find below the zipped save file with one of the saves with the sandstone issue.

You will notice two storage containers.  The one in the lower right has 6.5 tons of sandstone sitting next to it (because I recently ejected the sandstone from it).  Also resource report show no sandstone available.

I do not see why any of the dupes do not have access to this sandstone, and yet ladders, etc. are greyed out.

TuDystopia C6 sandstone issue.zip

Ladder near the washbasins is gapped two high.  Fill in the Ladder.  That will also get you to the two areas with block building.  It looks like a place you had room for a ladder was some plants, and you dropped the plant, built in the lowest ladder, but never refilled the ladder spaces after the plant was removed.

HI.

Thanks.  How do you propose I fill in the ladder (which is not blocking access to the sandstone) when I cannot designate any ladders to be built due to the inaccessibility of the sandstone.

I understood why the rest of the ladder wasn't being built.  The issue is that I cannot designate any new items using sandstone to be built, even though there is sandstone available.

Regards,

As @Kabrute said, but with a little more information.  A ladder, when designated, automatically places its material as claimed.  So, instead of simply taking whatever is nearby, it will take whatever is nearby and then trade its claimed position with something else.  So, as mentioned, cancel constructions until some of your nearby sandstone is claimable, then you should have freed up enough sandstone to work with.

ah ok. i didn't load their save (why did you .zip it?!) so i didn't realise.
