Why is the map smaller ?

Recommended Posts

Thanks for the new update, I wonder why the new map is smaller? If I scroll to the limits sideways I can still see the glow from the starter region. It seems a lot taller than it is wide.

Is this computing and optimisation related? If so can we not have some say about this in the game setup, I run a desktop i7 and 32Gb with SSD, I dont overbuild and dont have any kind of performance issues with the game, why should someone like me forego the exploration experience because other people play differently on different hardware?

TBH I find it disappointing to see the map shrink and it feels like it limits the possibilities of a single map. When I first played I was expecting an infinite or at least very large procedural map like Minecraft where difficulties with the start position could be overcome by exploration and relocation. That simply isnt possible with a map this size, every map is a dice roll and people will be chopping and changing maps rather than overcoming adversity through ingenuity, wont they?

Thanks Oozinator that is very useful, will get modding right away. I wonder if it will add to an existing map?

Worldgen could influence worldgeneration only, when world is generated..
That is normally done, when you start a fresh map.
I know nothing, about adding patches afterwards, like buying parcells in prison architect ^^

Yes I see, it had no effect on the existing map but a new world is a roomy 1024 x 512 which should see me through. Thanks again to yourself and Hanro50 who wrote the guide.

I hope that some kind of map size chooser is on the to do list, as with Dont Starve.

I believe there are 2 reasons the maps feel smaller.  1) familiarity, its no longer as much :exploring the unknown:  2) that edge.  When you scroll left/right now it blocks the cameras edge at the map edge.  I don't think it was doing that before tubular but I'm not 100% sure, this is just my opinion.

Bigger maps would be a great idea. As would adding in new areas to get copper, as you soon run out.

In order to avoid running out of copper, only use it for essential stuff, and never run it thru the crusher. I recommend saving at least 6 tons for future exosuit usage. I use iron for pretty much everything, plus whatever metal volcano.

Also, one more important thing. I played using bigger maps. The more you discover, the more it will lag. We already have lag issues as of this map size. So use at your own risk. I gave up on them after already having problems in just 200 cycles.

My current colony is on a 512x512 map, and I've only uncovered roughly a third of it and I'm already having some fps lag issues with certain overlays up. Not sure how the experience will be once I uncover more. I am playing on fast speed, though, so that may be contributing.

I actually like the idea of a smaller map, it makes managing much harder specially in late game.

I like the idea of making the size of the map an option.  But I also want to have a larger map with which I can do interesting things and there are a ton of resources that I have to work hard to get to.  Each version creates a different challenges and different opportunities.  For example, on the small map, you get to the oil very quickly and get plastics ready in the mid game, but you have fewer wheezeworts in the late game, as well as a smaller oil biome.  On the larger map, it is the reverse.  Your dupes can't reach the oil biome at all until you have exosuits or a good oxygen infrastructure, which means that you won't be able to get to oil until significantly later.  But you have more wheezeworts and the oil biome is larger.

Having started in Agriculture, I can confirm with 100% certainty that this behavior has existed since then.

If it's an option, sure.  If it's required, absolutely not.  Not everything can be optimized and designed around running on a potato.  I would hope that, as an industry, game devs will acknowledge that computer technology has passed a few thresholds where we need to start raising minimum spec expectations.
