They're probably removed because the sharp shoulders are more indicative of a villain and are in the style of the shadows, so taking them away makes the figure look more normal which Maxwell technically is now for the most part. It's unlikely the survivors did it though considering that's a more subtle and complicated piece of symbolism, so it was probably done by either Charlie or the shadows.
