Naming: Food poisoning vs Slimelung

Recommended Posts

The naming of the two diseases seems a bit inconsistent to me.

On the one side there is Food poisoning. It is a good name, we immediately know what the disease is about (digestion & food). Some might even know it from experience. But it is a rather neutral term without much flavor.

On the other side there is slimelung. Again it is a good name, again we know what the symptoms might be (breathing problems, coughing), we even get a good idea of the source despite not being a real-life term. But on top of all this it is just funny. It sounds funny, the composition of slime and lung draws graphic pictures in ones mind. To me it is the perfect name for a disease in a game like ONI.

So my point is. Please find a similar name for food poisoning as well. I couldnt think of a good one myself yet, afterall it might be a bit more fecal due to the cirumstances ("glue-poo", "bellyache", "tummy-itch", "lump dump").

I am already curious what might be the next diseases you got in stock for ONI.

I think "Space-monella" might work too, most people have heard of Salmonella (though in reality it is far more serious then typical food poisoning).  Your food poisoning alternatives seem to revolve around constipation though and that's not really what food poisoning generally is for most folks, I'd go with something related to the vomiting if you wanted something that is trying to convey symptoms like "Feco-Puko-forma".

The wiki HERE lists the following names that are currently buried in files but are not used.

Lazibonitis, SawCorpsosis, HeatRash, FierySkin, ColdBrain, Dweebcephaly

These are all very much in the flavor that your looking for, but I think they are conditions rather then the names of diseases themselves.

My personal idea for a new disease is "Hyperborean Pox" and it comes from the Ice Biomes polluted ice.  It reduces a Dupes insulation and drains body heat (yes they actually become a walking violation of thermodynamics like a Wheezwort), if left untreated long enough they can freeze solid unless you keep them in a very warm area.

@ImpalerWrG: I like space-monella. It sounds funny enough for my taste, but it has another flaw, which i didnt point out clearly in my OP.

Food-Poisoning describes a disease by its origin.

Slimelung describes it by its symptoms (and the origin).

That's why i concentrated more on the digestion-part on my suggestions. However you are right to point out that it is not just digestion, but also other symptoms, which are hard to aggregate in a single term. But that is the term, i'd consider a perfect fit. Funny + describing symptoms (all/most of them) + bonus points for additional information (e.g. origin).

@Kabrute: Keep'em coming!

Comet vomit. Fluke puke. Food fountain.

Yes your right Space-monella isn't descriptive enough.  What did you think of 'Feco-Puko-Forma'? You get symptoms and Origin at the same time.  Of your new names I like Fluke puke best, were both on an rhyming theme which gives a nice ring and a light hearted note.

'Feco-Puko-Forma' doesn't ring any bells to me. Feco = Feces? Puko = Puke? But why Forma?

In any case the term should be able to stand on its own without much information.

I like the sound of 'fluke puke' as well, but unfortunately 'fluke' seems to be a rather bad match in the context.

It's a pun on Fecal coliform a term for a group of bacteria that includes E. Coli, Forma in this context is just to be science sounding pig-latin

You figured out the main points of the name and it could just be Feco-Puko if that's easier.  I don't have any trouble with Fluke as that is a real intestinal parasite, what do you think of swapping the name to 'Puke Fluke'?

Hmmm... Bowelosis?

Solid fallback term. But it lacks the funny part, dont you agree?

On this asteroid you can catch SlimeLung and BrokenBung

Bung

a stopper for closing a hole in a container.

I'm afraid the "no need to explain" argument applies here.:/

To quote Beavis:"I need more TP for my bunghole!"

LeakyBung, BungRushing

Is bung really that common in english? I consider myself fluent (not by birth though), but have never heard of it until @Kabrute posted it here.

Considering its translation i'd like to add Bung Blaster. Squeezy Bung.

Mostly excellent. Apart from a few longish ones.

Rashmouth, tonguepox and gutrot seem like good companions to slimelung, the only (very minor) downside is that the first two are just convering one spectrum (mouth/vomit).

I also like the context/in-universe plays with space, morbs.

What do you think of belly barf? Does it make sense?

My personal kind of headcanon is that morbs are basically micro-organisms that can grow to giant size. Like, there could be millions of mostly harmless mini-morbs all around the asteroid that help things decompose and it's only when things get really insanitary like with uncleaned outhouses or dead dupes where the morb germs can grow up into the full grown morbs that we see. Or maybe they are a kind of intestinal fluke or a dupe version of the gut microbes that allow humans to digest food.

Whatever the case, it makes sense that morbs would basically be like giant microbes or something and that accidentally swallowing a little one would make a dupe sick.

As for things like Barfing Belly ... meh. Alot of those were just me tossing out ideas, wouldn't be surprised if they don't work.
