Even if you don't like Minecraft, you can't deny it had a pretty big impact on gaming. It popularized the survival and battle royal genres. Heck, I remember reading up that one of the inspirations of DS was Minecraft. It helped to popularize it, but it wasn't the beginning. I'd suggest looking into Battle Royale. It's a very similar concept that was written and published long before Hunger Games. And I'm sure there's other examples that predate even that. Heck, even gladiatorial combat is fairly similar in some ways. I honestly don't even remember the point I was trying to make anymore. I think I'm just rambling at this point...
