Any update on new content?

Recommended Posts

A New Reign has been out for nearly a year (Heart of the Ruins - March 2017) and we haven't had any (permanent or non-event) new content since then. I am wondering whether or not Klei has abandoned DST (like what Valve did to TF2) since they've been focusing on ONI and Hot Lava a lot recently. Any update or news that I might have missed out?

I think you're a little mistaken, my friend. Open your Steam. ;)

Year of the Varg. That doesn't sound like permanent, non-event content to me.

Don't get me wrong, I do like event content, but I'd like to have something that adds a bit more to the actual game.

I know what you mean, but abandoning isn't the right word though. I would not compare it to TF2 at all. I'm really hopeful for some substantial character rebalancing soon, or having a more fleshed out non-event The Forge experience for the long run. Until then...

I understand. I totally agree with you, it would be great to have permanent content as well as the "New Reign" update. What I meant is that even without this, they continue to pay attention to the game, making new updates and adding new content, even if it is temporary.

New content is new content, permanent or not. If Klei were to abandon it like Valve did, we wouldn't be getting anything but the occasional skin update, as opposed to the stuff we are getting - some of which can be made permanent with mods anyway.

We have been getting performance improvements and bugfixes for content in the main game. I haven't checked but the new file system introduced in Winter's Feast looks like it saved a decent amount of storage space making download times for updates and the game shorter.

Also maybe we could include the skins as permanent content although it is technically event content.

If Klei followed the Valve model of development we would get minor bug fixes every 12 or so months and wait 18 months for a minor content update filled with new bugs that will remain unpatched for years to come. And the "new functionality and content" we would get would be bugfixes for bugs that have been in the game nearly 10 years. Sure its nice that it was fixed but.......that fix should have came 9 years ago.

I don't think Klei will adopt the Valve dying game development cycle because they

1.Care about their games and community.

2.Need the money. (DST is huge and highly profitable for them. Valve makes so much money from Steam that they don't need their games revenue and can afford to abandon them......)

3.Valve allows their employee's to work on whatever they want. (Which lately seems to be a whole lot of nothing.) I don't think Klei operates the same.

Maybe someday in the future development for DST will stop but I don't think it will be soon. The series has been getting a lot of content (remember a new DLC is coming for singleplayer) and DST is getting a second event. Last year Klei finished the ANR expansion, gave us the Forge, Hallowed Nights and Winters Feast along with lots of bugfixes and other tweaks. They started working on Hamlet and also gave us an update for SW. This doesn't look like a dying game or series to me.
