Trouble fighting because of my connection?

Recommended Posts

Soo first, I downloaded the mod "health info" just to confirm my suspicions, something like 4 out of 5 hits dont connect on giants ; weirdly, it is mostly against giants.. I just tried the deerclop and I was literally swinging in the air continually. Really frustrating. Couple minutes later, I fought a treeguard and had no problem hitting him.

Secondly, I really feel that I have a very big hurtbox, 3x the size of my character. I'm always getting hit by hounds snapping the air. I see people on youtube dodging hits very close to the ennemi hitbox. It frustrates me very much, I can't fight properly on DST. I did not have this problem on DS.

I used to think it was simply a connection problem, but more and more I feel it is not ; there is no lag when I pickup stuff or anything. I only have trouble with hitboxes and hurtboxes.

I'm on a macbook pro, could this be a mac problem? Heard of something like this?   :(

The game is lying about your character position to make the game feel smoother. Disable lag compensation in the settings so that hitting or dodging enemies won't look weird anymore, but your actions will appear delayed. The thing is, your actions are delayed because of ping in both cases, lag compensation is merely a placebo.

Yes i tried the movement prediction option and like @Hobgoblino said, it gets laggy and even worse over all ... :/ I dont get it, I have a good internet..

(Someone correct me if I am wrong please)

When you disable movement prediction you see the truth, so you won't get hit one screen away or miss a lot of hits, you'll se your character standing still and getting the hit or scratching his ear while you furiously press "f", which is good, because that's what is actually happening. With movement prediction enabled you would see your character moving away but would get hit anyway or you would see your character missing all the hits like they aren't even trying, this happens because the server didn't "received" your action and for the server you was dumbly standing still, basically, movement prediction ON = placebo.

There's an easy way to test this: With medium~high ping and movement prediction enabled, try moving far away as possible with the mouse and open the map while your character moves, if your character icon moves but the field of vision don't it's because you are lagging and movement prediction is making you see yourself on the spot that you clicked/pressed to go but not on the spot where you actually are.

It may still seem laggy to you because the movements of the character suddenly appear jerky and awkward the first time you turn it off. You have to choose between that and laggy fighting. For that reason, I turned it back on again several times before getting fed up at being hit by spiders and biting the bullet. But you do eventually get used to it and stop noticing it except  when playing on a server with very high ping. Try fighting some of the mobs that have been giving you trouble with it turned off.

@V2C this "lag compensation" is completely rubbish. Making the game seem smoother when it actually renders the gameplay worse, even for those who have an excellent connection is extremely bothersome. Can we have the movement prediction... Sorry, "lag compensation" turned off by default? I don't know a single person who nowadays looks at the game and thinks "oh man, that lag compensation... Top notch stuff, great job, devs!"

Could my lag problem be the Mac's graphic card?

Frame drops and server lag are two different things. Frame drops are due to lack of memory or your graphics card can't handle it. Server lag is your internet's speed in relation to sending and recieving data.

When it comes to lag compensation, this is talking about server lag. Therefore, you would need to look into increasing your internet speed.

Do you live with others? If they're using the same connection you are, that affects your send/recieve rate.

I'll try again to get use to lag compensation at "off" and deal with what I have  :S ..

Could my lag problem be the Mac's graphic card? What kind of mac are you using @Rellimarual ? I want to fix this lag problem and I dont know where it comes from.

A five-year-old MacAir, and I play over a wireless connection, so I really doubt my set up is superior to yours.

hmm really? How much time delay you have approximately? I have something like 5/6 sec of delay.

5 secs? wut? it's ping 5000 you know? what is yours btw, press backspace in game to see the info

i can't kite properly tentacle or tallbird after ping ~70 and beefs after ~90 (if i don't have packetloss repeatedly)

so tell me, what internet do you use, is it cable or wifi, home or dorm

Well, it's not that much unless I'm trying to play on a server with very high ping. Try it with a server at around 30 or less just to test it. All I'm saying is that at first disabling movement prediction seem unplayable, but over time you don't notice it.

lol Not 5 sec!! 5/6 second the fraction ; aka 0,83 second approx

ah, sorry, got used to write like that (alongside with 5-6) and yes, i got 1/2-1 secs delay sometimes too, even though my ping says it should be at least ten times faster (ping ~80 from me to uk), i guess it's partly my connection's fault though

maybe try launching steam with -udp parameter or just check your packetloss first (you can use "ping ip -n N" where ip can be ip of server or something common like google 8.8.8.8 and N is number of packets - the more, the longer and the more precise) to doublecheck

and yes, crysis or dst - no difference for protocols
