Does anyone else find it interesting that quite a few (at least 40%) of the characters up until shipwrecked have some kind of mental health condition?

-Willow is a "pyromaniac" and is unsafe to be around, she uses lighting fires as a coping mechanism for when she's nervous
-Wendy possibly struggles with grief over Abigail's death, probably has depression and is at the very least extremely negative and gloomy
-Wickerbottom has insomnia and hasn't slept since... forever
-Wigfrid believes herself to be a viking - schizophrenia?
-Woodie believes an axe is talking to him - schizophrenia? (Although to be fair, I think Lucy may be real and not just his imagination)

Of the 10 original characters, at least 4 have some kind of mental problem...

Oh and while we're at it, Wilson used to spend all day doing scientific experiments and this was what got him to the world of DS in the first place which suggests he might be a little unhinged too.

Just an actor that really wants to stay in-character, though she goes OOC a few times in her lines.

I think she really does talk to him. A quick look on DST and how the characters examine her could show us that (or not).

... fair enough,,,

I do not think most characters have mental illness as there is very little that they won't do

i always thought that the sanity meter acted more like a threshold before they have a mental break.

just how every one has corks or things some people can handle events more easily then others.

Also I consider insomnia to be a physical barrier of sorts as for some can only be treated through medication.

Thats not to say you can't develop insomnia from mental trama but its more to my understanding a inabilty to sleep regardless if you want to or not. Wicerbottom's insomnia seems just to be a physical barrier as she seems to be a well adjusted person.

Pyromania in willows case is just seems like a comfort thing like a blanket and I know that sometimes people including myself have wish they had something to hold on to making the feeling go away. This is really common if you suffer from a phobia. Willow just enjoys settings things of fire but doesn't deliberately burn everything in sight. If I followed your logic then my god there would always be a lighter and hammer in my hand. Willow lighting things as I said only seem to be a coping mechanism

Wendy I say is probably the closest one to have a mental illness of depression however she could still be in the process of greiving as she is shown that she cares and cared alot about her sister. Wendy has through this way as a very close relationship to death but being in grief does not make you automatically have mental depression. As the fact that you can still play as her with the same goal as survival shows that she still values her life.Wendy does not go out of her away to get things to kill her. So she could be in grief or in greiving that might have permanently altered her personality however I would not go out of my way that she suffers from a very serious case of depression to be mental illness as I think you suggested

Webber is a kid and still seems to be very naive and still up beat even despite his circumstance so I say he is fine and as far as I find in speech and quotes is well adjusted for his age and events

In conclusion besides wickerbottom and wolfgang where it is fact and stated that they have an illness they all seem in their circumstance to not suffer from a mental illness Wison is debunked as he is a novice sciencetist and while he shows passion to be a scientist and succed he has no great obsession that consumes him.

consider this topic back on track choo choo
