So sick of griefers

Recommended Posts

Last night, I was playing DST on a dedicated server, minding my own business, and had the start of a decent base.   This guy comes to my base just before night and drops some grass beside the fire and lights it ablaze.  He's making ash, i think.  No worries.  We both exchange greetings and proceed to wait out the night.

Then he eats a mandrake and my character falls asleep because of it.  Then, without any hesitation, he then proceeds to drop a piece of gunpowder beside my sleeping body and lights it on fire.  I die of course.  (this was not a PVP server).

He then loots my body and takes everything of value from my camp.  And then, for what reason i can't even imagine, he kills Chester!

I call him out in the chat as the troll that he is, so everyone else in the server will know.  But what is the point really.  He is a jerk and he has gotten away with it. :(

What I want to know is why people do nasty things like this?  Why can't they just let people play the game and be a decent human being?

It is a sad world that we live in when people get pleasure from causing other people grief.

Wow that's some advanced griefing, I'm sorry you had to experience that. Had my fair share of griefers back when the game entered in public early access, but I felt like they were way rarer these last months... I guess a recrudescence was to be expected since the game quit beta.

As for why they do it, well... I think most of them are young people, who just want to watch the world burn piss others off and who don't take the game seriously. They mindlessly steal your things, burn the trees and the structures and stay as a ghost when they eventually die to **** with your sanity (in survival), 'cause that's the easiest way to do damages.

I don't think the one you had encountered fall into that category though, given the... creative way he screw you up with. I've already heard one of them said that was the only way he played DST, using a bunch of tricks to kill players (not in PvP, again), and he was proud of him. It's sad to see people using their skills and intelligence to hurt others but I guess there are jerks everywhere...

That's hardcore and advanced griefing, I'm sorry for this. At least it's very rare in this form. I've played dst 743 hours so far so let me tell you that I've suffered from a lot of griefing. Many months ago the base used to be destroyed in almost every game I went on, every day...I stopped playing because of this, settling alone in a corner of the map the farthest possible from the portal, as I did sometimes, isn't fun at all. Besides, hearing "just play with friends what's wrong with you" was utterly disheartening.

I've started playing again one or two months ago and you may be reassured to know that griefing has decreased a lot. Maybe it's thanks to the playstyle options (social, cooperative, etc...), I can't say for sure. I know at least two types of griefing : the simple one, someone comes and burns everything. This type is actually rare now. What I mostly see is degenerating situations, too many people in a small base, one fridge, two crockpots, the chat becomes flooded...this often results in a burnt base some in-game days later. It's the least bad type of griefing because it's more of a cry of despair than maliciousness, and you have a chance to avoid it.

People used to always settle near beefalos, but now the pig king biome is prefered. Everyone converging there makes the base a hot spot, you can avoid that by building a base elsewhere and inviting people from the server via the chat, this has saved my ass a couple of times, and you still get to play with people, even if sometimes I ended up being alone.

Luckily you can no longer do that since friendly spiders no longer aggro on other players. (When PVP is off at least)

The webber you mentioned is actually my friend, He told me a story about how you were rummaging through his chests, He thought you were a threat to his survival and tried to get you away using spiders, He mentioned that you "burned the base down in retaliation"...

Sorry, that guy is a bit paranoid of griefers, but seeing how you burned the base down, he had a right to be paranoid.

Small world, huh?

...Anyways, I'm sorry that this happened to you, CautiousGamer. I've been hiding from everybody potential griefers ever since my base got burned down several days in a row, Being paranoid really ruins the whole "together" experience, although paranoia is what keeps you alive.

As a rule of thumb, i feel it is just good manners to ASK if you can join their camp, or at least spend the night.  This way, you start things off on the right foot and no one gets unnecessarily hostile.  I'm guessing that if this guy had taken the time to do that with your Webber friend, the situation wouldn't have escalated and everyone would have enjoyed a good game.

Some players just help themselves to other people's stuff and that puts people on the defensive.

Taking the time to greet each other and chat a bit is always good practice.  Seasoned players automatically do this but i find that young kids sometimes take basic manners for granted.  If you are playing with strangers, it's important to take the time to be courteous.  :)

I was playing with that Webber. Was out gathering some saplings at the time, and heard him in teamspeak telling this guy was trying to take our stuff and burn our base, but webber turned on flingo. I ran back just to see this guy made a hammer, smashed our flingo and proceeded to burn it again. My webber friend was trying to just defend the base we had been working since the start of the world to build (it was late spring when this guy got to us. x_X)

Not in this particular game, but we are friends and play together a lot. It was just me and my webber friend playing together on Ipsquiggle server that day. After coming back and seeing my base torched, I vented to him on steam, though.

Griefers frustrate me so much. >:O

definitely i agree there, i play DST for awhile and thats most people settle base and griefers get to notice it

i usually put my base a bit far from spawn or road, and sometimes i built at dessert biome since not much people notice it

I had 20 days  survive, I just wanted to stop and rest for a moment , I do not take anything of the chest, from one moment to another a weber I wanted to kill me with his army of spiders, with no reason, if he had no armor, I would have died. I not griefer, only gave me angry,  I wanted to kill me for no reason . Sorry for my bad English.

Yeah, I'm that Webber that tried to kill the intruder with the spiders.

Like Bill and Oracle says, the only reason the attack was initiated was because this guy was rummaging through our belongings. I've ASKED him to not go through our belongings but he continued doing so anyway. I've decided to have him executed through the use of my spiders, since it was a non-pvp server; since I knew you can't have spiders aggro on players when befriended with meat, I've taken all my spiderhats, put one on, triggered a nest, had them follow me, lure them to the guy, and the spider warriors triggered on him as I took it off. During the process, he tried to torch our base while being attacked in circles but I've turned on the ice flingomatic. He later came in after escaping to make a hammer to smash it and torched the base again, successfully doing so this time.

Bill wanted to kill the guy on that other server because his good friends were on there and wanted to make sure they don't get griefed by him. He kept me updated as to how the killings were being initiated.

Here's screenshot evidence of the crime scene.

"I was hungry, and you I wanted to kill me."

Well if you wanted food, you could have just asked and I could have made you something instead of just barging looking through the hard-earned belongings. I would have made you some bacon and eggs. I'm not aggressive by default, do note that, but if I suspect a thief, I don't go easy.

If people ask politely then I help him. If they are rude, then I'm rude to them back. Simple golden rule.

OK, this is a post for discussing Griefers, not to start a fight, calm down its just a game!

How is there fighting or anger? It's just a simple argument.

Plus, this does relate to a griefing incident so I don't really see why you post this.

I remember once I was griefed 3 times in a row lol...Boy was I pissed or what? I know it's just part of the game, but some people acting like pricks isn't doing any good to the game as a whole.

This is one of the reasons I would love to see a mod or something that anyone who's interested can install it on their server and be part of the community shared ban list, and Klei wouldn't have anything to do with it and they could focus on the game rather than dealing with pricks.

The bans should be by default for 1-2 hours, plenty of time to deter out any other attempts to grief other servers in a short time span thus ruining multiple innocent people game. So, anyone up for the challenge of making something something like this? :)

The reason I play on a non-dedicated server I made most of the time (totally not because I failed to set it up properly) is in part due to griefers.

Much rather play a server on my lonesome than lose all my work due to one a&$.

Sorry that you have been griefed in such a horrible way! I wonder how he made you fall sleep with a mandrake without falling asleep himself? Usually the one who eats and the surrounding mobs fall asleep.

The griefers are the reason why i usually base somewhere far from portal and hard to find. This results in many people being pissed if you dont reply / tell them where a base is. There are so many people joining lately with only like 1 - 15 hours on dst and asking immediately after they spawned into the world if someone can pick them up for base..
