Something to counter sleep and drowsiness

Recommended Posts

When you face other players in a PvP context or a hibernating Bearger, induced sleep and subsequent drowsiness is incredibly overpowering. There's quite simply nothing at all that you can do to combat it.

Some ideas:

- some type of amulet that wards off sleep at the cost of an armor slot and an insanity aura.

- a new crockpot food that is caffeinated and will immediately dispel drowsiness once eaten.

Hmmm... expensive... sounds fair...

recipe pls :)

how are you going to eat it if you're asleep? O__O

My take (if I may):

  • Make the rabbit earmuffs null out sound related attacks (like the panflute, or mandrake screech... which is something I would also like t push)

Then again, yawns are contagious by just seeing someone yawn... but in DST, just being in the area (even when not directly facing the Bearger) can make you feel drowsy... O___O

My suggestion:   Gramophone.

Well, I was thinking a sort of dropped (or placed) object that prevents sleep in its vicinity due to its annoying (or awesome, depending on point of view) muzac tunes.

Something akin to the one you find near Maxwell.  : )

hmm... something like the lantern item which can be placed on the ground and be picked up? that sounds reasonable :)

could finally get the Gramophone in the game other than that adventure mode finale :)

Yes, pretty much exactly what I was thinking, like the lantern.  One might still be caught by surprise w/ it in their inventory, but you could drop it quickly if you notice your character getting drowsy.

Also... gramophone!

Also... gramophone!

As I said, it will dispel drowsiness. Drowsiness is what occurs after you wake up from being asleep.

Ahh, my apologies... although I still think that a way to prevent this is better than a cure... O___O

But just in case, what do you suggest would be the recipe, and extent of the effect (stats) O___O

In my experience, it is drowsiness that is the real killer. They can get at minimum one hit in when you're asleep, but drowsiness lasts for like ten seconds allowing your aggressor to just pummel you for the entire duration.

Maybe the food, if eaten beforehand, will prevent you from going to sleep entirely, but you'll still go to the drowsy state, and you have to eat another one to get out of that. So if someone puts you to sleep and you haven't eaten anything yet, they'll get one hit in, and then you'll eat your caffeinated food and be immune from sleep for the rest of the battle (until it goes past the point of effect). I also think eating this food should reduce sanity so if the two players enter a sleep-wake cycle it becomes a sanity game.

Another idea: the aggressor is also susceptible to their own call to sleep, and must have done something to protect themselves before they use it. I like this because it adds another layer of preparation that is required, and there is a greater sanity cost to their aggressor (who also has a bigger potential payoff if their adversary hasn't prepped properly).

As far as recipes, I think adding cacao to the farm crops might be a viable solution. Cacao contains theobromine which is chemically and effectually similar to caffeine.

edit: the durian could act like or be used in the crafting of smelling salts due to its extreme smelliness.

Would be cool if the gramophone could make others players to start dancing and you could use it in PvP to make people stop running or in PvE could raise sanity depending on the music. ^_^

Edit : I would also like it if you like in terraria you could record music cause I love the other season music better than the Autumn music.

Good idea, also maybe the deerclops (or bearger, ...) can hear it and come to that party and dance, too, after it raided the place.

About sleeping state at fight: You are still able to fight at same state as you are awake. Don't underestimate yourself. I even killed at least 3 people ( not in the same time ), while I was in that sleepy state fighting (Wigfrid XD)

Armor alone should counter it. Putting a person to sleep unless through a flute, should not be possible when someone has any type of armor on. Combat should be remade in this game for the sake of PvP. After playing some PvP, I had the most fun in this game than I've ever had even though it's not even attended for that playstyle.

You could also use like... Smelling salts. You could make them with the smelliest foods or items, like a durian, maybe some evil petals, and a rotten egg. They could be used to provide sleep immunity for a limited amount of time or to cure drowsiness. Maybe you take a sanity hit when you use them.

Who am I kidding the gramophone sounds way cooler. Gramophone for the win! Maybe this could be the cheap way and the gramophone master race could be the expensive, reusable, super awesome way.
