I've been thinking about this for a while.

There should be a mod that lets you explore the ocean with its own creatures, structures and mechanics. I need some help with designing it though, if it could ever become possible.

Exploring the Deep

Well, the Deep is underwater. The player character walks along the surface. And there should be a mechanic similar to overheating or freezing, where its drowning. There would items in the mod that would help you with breathing underwater, such as air bubbles and air tanks. There should also be broken stone walls as a reference to the sunken city of Atlantis. As WX-78, he will be damaged constantly under water, but an air tank can protect him.

There are two places of the Deep (Ocean), the first is the Shallow Zone and the second is the Midnight Zone. The Midnight Zone is eternally night and there is darkness everywhere except for the hole that lets light from the shallow zone get through. Like in caves, there are plants that emit light.

Items

An air tank should definitely be an item to create, that would be worn on the back and increases the amount of time to be underwater without beginning to drown. Also, it has a durability. An airtank guards WX-78 from water damage.

A bubble shield can act as a fireplace and expands when you put more fuel on it. (Or whatever would power a bubble, rot? Soap?)

Of course there'd be different kinds of bubbles.

You could craft a sleeping bag-like items called the Sea Bed.

You could hunt fish like rabbits with traps underwater as an idea, with fishnets. Clams could be the equivalent of bushes, where you harvest them with oysters, but its only a rare chance to find oysters. And seeweed are the grass tufts of the Deep. Stones can be underwater as well.

The Creatures

The animals would probably be the main attraction. Or at least one of the threats.

Sharks

The Deep's equivalent of Hounds and Depths Worms! Hooray! They attack the player character in packs and (yes I realize that sharks only attack humans because they think they're fish, but this is the Don't Starve world, where human sized turkeys eat berries and anthropomorphic pigs eat meat) can be found on the overworld hunting for meat and fish.

Jelly-Fish

A play on words actually, its a type of fish that when killed produces goop, or jelly if you wanted to add it in the mod.

Crabs

Crabs are the Deep's Pigs and Bunnymen. Why? Because crabs in the real-world are omnivores. It makes sense to give this role to them, because the pigs eat meat and vegetables, fruits and seeds and Bunnymen are strict vegetarians.

Crabs live in Rock Shelters and should be able to be crafted with lots of stone. The Crabs would attack any hostile creature in defense and will come running (er, skittling) if a fellow Crab is attacked. They will also hunt fish actively and eat the fish. They can be befriended with any type of fish and will help with hunting fish and attacking mobs.

Sea-Turtles

Sea Turtles! They emerge from the top of the screen (like Pengulls jumping out of water) and appear in packs to lay eggs underwater (again, Don't Starve world). If a player comes close to where they have settled and they have turtle eggs, they will attack when they come near, like territorial Tall-birds.

Electric Eels

These mobs are neutral mobs, giving an electric shock when they land a hit. The shock has an AoE and drains sanity quick.

Manta Ray

Manta Rays are passive mobs that wander effortlessly across the water. They retreat when attacked by a player character. Sharks hunt these things and they will retreat immediately when a character warns the player of sharks coming.

Sea Cucumber

Like Slurtles and Snurtles, the Sea Cucumber is a cylindrical mob that attacks characters on sight, the opposite of the Snurtle. They have no place to call home, instead wandering the sea floor. They crawl along the ground searching for food.

Bufferfish

Smooth round fish that are neutral and puff up like a balloon when attacked and retaliates by attacking the player or whatever attacked them. When they puff up, they take less damage, as buffer comes from to lessen the impact of something.

Rod Fish

Rod Fish are hostile mobs that constantly have a light radius from their light like an angler fish and appear in the Midnight Zone.

Viper-Fish

A snake-like fish that has large teeth and attacks anything near it. It has a light radius as well and Pun of Viperfish and the snake term. Appears in the Midnight Zone.

I really want to be able to create a mod. But is this asking way too much, especially for my first mod?

(XirmiX actually wants to make an entire DS overhaul, but he has to start somewhere I guess )

That depends in what way you interpret it. It would seem like a different Don't Starve experience, yes, much harder, with a lot more realism in place, but in terms of changing Don't Starve to a completely different game like Screecher did... then it's a no for that.

@TwitcheryGamer, Yeah this is the mod me and my friends are trying to develop. It is called "Creeps in the Deeps" and it will add an underwater mod plus some more interesting features to the DS WORLD (e.g. Water !).

Please if you wanna give us suggestions or wanna help us feel free to check the link gently posted by @Blueberrys, and there you should find everything you might want to know about this mod !

@Mobbstar, to be perfectly clear, the mod Xirmix was going to plan and this one are two different things. The mod of Xirmix was huge and very complicated to develop and therefore i said i was going to create an underwater mod separated from Xirmix mod. Two different mods, two different main developers  :lemo:

I thought of this today actually, thinking there could be a Don't Starve like Shanty town, where you spawn out of the dont starve map from a dock and onto a boat. The boat could take you to an island or a coastal town as the starting point . I imagine a boardwalk type setting, with a pipe organ themed background sound,

From there players would have to explore the map to find maps to build equipment and vessels to take them to the next map (thinking submarines and diversuits etc.)

But I had just thought of this today, and being so new, I doubt I could really participate with the project other then some artwork here and there. But whether or not I participate, I've already started collecting inspiring stuff to dream of the idea. I love this genre! It's full of hops and pazazz!

That actually sounds like a great idea, but probably not the best for your first mod. Nothing really sounds too outrageous, the only thing would be changing it so that WX doesn't have to breathe since he's a robot. That'd mean that he'd drown a lot faster without the airsuit, but once he has it on it won't constantly drain, and instead you could factor in damage to take pieces of durability away as well as the constant air drain a normal character would have. Just make sure to have the suit itself have a high enough durability to make it plausible to fight anything.

I had a similar idea a little while back, but I don't know how to code or anything. I called the mod "Under the Sea!" and drew up some concept art. Instead of hounds, I had...giggle...snicker...DOGFISH!

well spent all part of yesterday and sunday looking up inspiration to help with an underwater mod!

I plan on working on sanity effects

a submarine prototype

jellyfish mobs

some flora and fauna

map tiles

once Ive completed them i'll send you a pm to see if you want to take a look!

Well our plan for WX is that obviously he doesn't have to have a breathing helmet since he's a robot and therefore does not breathe; THOUGH since the metal and salty water are not very good together, when "diving" with WX the player would experience a sanity drain.

Shouldn't he constantly lose health, like in the rain?

EDIT: Oh, ok, that will be done, didn't read it all : P
