McTusk Father and Son Hunting Expedition - DST

Recommended Posts

I would like to address this little matter that affects our lives in "The World"...

The McTusk father and (...yeah, the title)

So, in single player, I typically just hunt these hunters in a myriad of ways...

  • Making eye-contact with McTusk and seducing him with my blonde hair while my sister entertains his dogs...
  • Lure the dogs away from their master and beat them to death... then have a boomerang vs blow dart showdown...
  • Kill dogs, chase walrus, and beat to death with ham... (serve with honey)

And my favorite... (bring on the big guns!!)

  • Shoot McTusk with Ice Staff until frozen, kill hounds while he watches in horror. Taunt him by freezing his son, then beat him to death with ham... after this torture, kill him too... take his hat, and tusk, to make a cane... his ghost follows me around...

Now, in DST, things get really interesting.

  1. With more people around, would is it easier to kill him or not?
  2. How do you prepare?
  3. What tactics do you do?
  4. Did I leave the campfire near the berry bushes again?
  5. What does supercalifragilisticexpialidocious have to do with the Tam o' Shanter?

O_O

Also, where the heck do they go after winter? O_O

... and pengulls...

*gasp! A new island/biome of full-on frost?!

It's way easier. Usually what I do is have one person fight the hounds, and the other chases him until he turns around and walks past you (a method that worked before, but the hounds made it a little hard).

I won't go down the question list but I will discuss one tactic I've only discovered on a player-hosted DST is that the host built around 3-5 Pig Houses right beside the Walrus Camps to help clear it out faster. In single player before I got into DST, I've resorted to planting spider eggs beside the camps which yield spider loot every now and then, but also help distract the dogs while I deal with McTusk. The spider eggs are easier to come by early on rather than building 3-5 houses.

With DST, you can share the load of dealing with every mob separately. That's all there is to it. You can get the job done faster.

Yeah, got the meat and the blow-dart, but was hoping for his Walrus Tusk and/or Tam o' Shanter.

Do you only have the one camp? typically (for me anyway) I get at most, 3 McTusk camps... have you explored all over your map?

In DS: kills everything and takes 20 damage.

In DST: 1.kills everything and take 80 damage.

2.Sometimes I get lucky with the world gen: tall birds killed the party and i get free loots.

3.Got loots by hiring pigs, then proceed to flame at evryone when the server host died(he reset the server)

4.friends put spider dens and tentacles near the camp, then died while trying to pick up the items.

I always make him aggro on Chester anyway so nothing's really changed for me.

Why do people like every single post you make? Like do they even agree with you ALL of the time, or are they fan-girling and liking just because reasons?

Wait... Putting spider dens near the walrus camps... Hei, that could work out actually in both DS and DST! Because there will be spiders killing them, and all though you won't get any meat, you'll have tons of tam-o-shanter, walrus tusks, hounds teeth an blue gems lying around! Score, as long as you can then destroy the dens with spiders and replant them.

Why do people like every single post you make?
Sometimes people like when someone has said what they would've said. The aggro on chester method is one of the best ways of taking out MacTusk, so I'm guessing that's why a bunch of people liked that post.
or are they fan-girling

Who could blame them! Look at him! He has empty eye sockets, sharp teeth, and pronounced veins pulsating in his head, and a face that could give you a heart attack if you happen to wake up in the middle of the night and see it!

He's HOT!!

Also, I think he's Maxwell...

O_O

So, what's your favorite method in dealing with them that you constantly do :)

Found him to be much easier in DST. We just ganged up on him, took down his hounds and then chased him down (I was Wilson, the other player was Wolfgang). I think the MacTusk hunting party could afford a buff. Not much strategy, just mashing F when the dogs inevitably spot us.

Speaking of MacTusk, it's probably just our luck but we killed like, 6 of them and didn't get the Tam o' Shanter. I know the drop rate in regular DS is only 1/4 but damn, that's never happened to me.

This happened to me in my first two DST worlds too, but in the third, I got the hat on the first try... and then proceeded to get 7 more hats in a row.

I think the random number gods were just rubbing it in.

Once the winter showed signs to set in decided to reach the expedition team in time for a second tusk. My first attempt was a fail, as didn't get a tusk. Took the meat and the blow dart I got from them and proceeded to the second camp. Sadly got there a bit late and they where already inside. Saw one of the blue hounds outside and used the blow dart i got from previous team and insta-killed one that was sleeping outside. :D

Didn't bothered with blow dart up until now but guess I just found a quick way to deal with the hounds. :)

After killing two parties, you can instantly deal with mactusk with two blowdarts (unless his health has changed, I can't remember) Lately I've just been saving up on blowdarts for enemies I don't want to deal with. (nobody comes to mind, but maybe one day I'll have a real use for all these blowdarts)

He has more HP in DST so it takes more blowdarts than the standard 2 from vanilla Don't Starve. I think it takes 4. Could be 3. Mayyybe 5? No more than 5 for sure though. I thought I tried it one time and it was 4 but -

FOR SURE it takes more than 2 blow darts

however - it just takes 1 sleep dart to put him to sleep and then you can just walk up to him and stunlock kill him with any weapon.

Yup, you're right, it takes 3 to kill him.

        WALRUS_HEALTH = 150 * 2, -- harder for multiplayer

I, personally, take out the two dogs separately, and then just chase him down for ultimate resource saving (it only takes a screen or so for him to get tired of running from you and start walking back to his house slowly.)

Why not? I've probably said what they were going to anyway so instead of posting the same thing tenfold they just like the post.

And my other posts usually are rather witty or a pun and everybody loves humour.

I could bet: within 1 hour time you'll have at least 3 likes for /\ that post!
