So let's talk about Depth Worms.

Are you trying to bring logic in a videogame that lets you store walls in your pockets?

Actually I'm just really happy to see you! *Ducks*

Now don't be complaining about mobs fighting each other.  It's part of Don't Starve, and one of its best features IMO.

And you should be able to bring some lobsters down to the ruins.  I brought a few up to the surface and they've spread out and formed herds and are beginning to (slowly) multiply.  It's a long term sort of project though but it's coming along nicely.

[chant repeats]

From the day we arrive on Maxwell's World
And blinking, step into the cave
There's more to spellunk than can ever be seen
More to do than can ever be saved
There's far too much to take down there
More to find than can ever be found
But the worms rolling high
Through the cave's lightless sky
Keeps great and small running around...

It's The circle of cave life

And it spellunks us all...

Through Spitters and Rocklobsters

Through fissures and ruined altars.

Till we find our  Rocky Turf

On the cobblestone path unwinding

In the Cave Circle

The Cave Circle of Life.....

[chant softly repeats]

* Cut to a Spellmonkey wearing a Witch Doctor (actually a Miner) Hat  shaking a tribal rattle (actually a Telelocator Staff) at the chosen baby Smallbird. The Tallbird Parents then mercilessly peck him to death....*

{My thanks to the Lion King of course. }

You can't give a glow fruit to a pig, but if you drop it he'll grab it and eat it, and then glow.

Same with Bunnies. The devs said they simply need to add the food to the Bunnymen's accepted feeding list. Bug report the Pigs so this also can be added to their diet.

What do you guys think about Worms not being able to surface on hardy turf, like rocky, cave rock, checkerboard and ruins turf?

It won't kill them but it'll keep them at bay, which means you'll have some breathing room but they'll still be waiting for when you'll eventually move out. Yeah, the movie Tremors comes to mind.

I never got any sort of feedback on this...

Well, it will limit them in the Cave as there's big sections that are just rock.  Make the daylight sections more difficult anyway.

It would be helpful in the Ruins though.  Having somewhere to go when you have 6 worms on your tail would be nice.

You gave me another idea to make depth worms worthwhile:

When they process any non-rock terrain, they periodically defecate rock-based terrain.

A couple of examples:

 - Carpet = Checkerboard

 - Wooden = Cobblestone

Basically they act like worms that consume turf and refine them.

In addition, there should be larvae, that can be placed in farms to provide both fertilization and a small light source (although if you step on the farm they will hide underneath the soil) for continued growth, but will consume 1/3 of the crops that are grown to sustain themselves. If they eat the same crop 3 times, they will perish (encouraging diversity). Once they outgrow this temporary haven, they will burrow into the ground and disappear.

Not sure how difficult the larve thing is to add, but it should be easy enough to have the worms eat stuff on the ground.

I do draw the line at worm pets/feeding them to makr them an ally. Worms are insane hunting-you creatures from Dune to Beetlejuice. We don't take them for walkies :p

Once they've outgrown the smaller food, they start giving you funny looks.

They'll follow you around but won't be able to surface, and you'll have to leave that rock patch sooner or later. That's when they'll attack. It would make ruins hard again beacue right now they just kill stuff for you...

I don't think the turf refinement is really useful...

Hound / Depth Worm comparison:

Hound: 150 hp, 20 damage

Worm: 900 hp, 75 damage

Although the max group of worms is 6 vs 10 hounds per wave, worms are clearly the more formidable enemy. They are less predictable, and more scary than hounds. Tooth traps don't work well because of their burrowing ability, and the fact they have 900 hp

This means that at late game, the cumulative hp of your attackers is 5400 for worms but only 1500 for hounds. Not to mention that with a log suit and football helmet, you are taking .8 damage from a hound attack and 3 damage from a worm attack. Not much alone, but the damage adds up a lot quicker.

If they destroy your armor, you are dead in 1-2 hits.

Not to mention the dark of the caves. They swoop on you. Swooping is bad...

Well, I really can't think of any other purpose that would make sense for worms...that burrow right through rock...

They lay eggs of silicon that you then collect and the worms, enraged, then shut down your mining operation to drive you off the pla--

Sorry.

Yeah, ya gotta carry a marble suit for those worms if they attack in large numbers. If one or two, kiting and/or a log suit is doable, but not 6...

Makes you wonder if Klei actually tested this themselves...or they were meant to be like this...

What i want is the Berry to be used in recipes to make super glow meals...

And i think they implemented it because of all of the complaints that caves didn't have a periodic threat like hounds. Problem is that hounds drop something useful at least....

Periodic threats are an example of lazy design.

And, technically, the glow fruit is like a tier 2 light-bulb right? It's organic, edible, rots and provides light. So it should refuel both lanterns and mining helmets. Then, there would be a tier 3 item...

To be honest i have 9 chests full of slurtle slime. I don't give a damn about it being fuel for lanterns...

The community goes about saying that the game and caves are too easy. "Well, go forth and have coitus with yourself!" says the well-educated Depth Worm.

You shouldn't fight them heads on in a melee brawl, especially not when they're in groups or you will most likely meet your demise. I stand by my suggestion (will add this to a huge cave-related idea thread), that the worms should have a chance to drop high tier valuable loot including thulecite (shards). I'm sure they ate some o that stuff here and there. Oh and either make the glowberry not able to spoil or that you can stack them...

Edit: Should not forget @TeoSS69 's idea aswell, that the worms cannot surface on hard turf!

And not be able to surface on hard turf. That too!! :p
