Will these two parts be considered one update or two as regards the road map for this year?

Let's take a step backward and see what we had in the last year (though we don't have 2025 roadmap to compare with).

We have been promised 2 (or more) content updates this year, so it seems the two parts are the phases of the first content update.

But considering the volume of shadow arc finale and the extra time paid to WX skilltree, it's more reasonable to think 2 content updates are all shadow arc finale related IMO.

(which means shadow boss would come in autumn)

Really cool stuff. I'm excited to see what's planned in part two!!

Spoiler

The lore implications for the Keystone are really interesting! Once given to Charlie it seems like it'll socket atop here. I guess you need both lunar AND shadow parts to activate the finale. How exciting!!

Im not sure if it appeared because i gave charlie the keystone, or if its just there now when you put in the atrium key, but either way it looks like potential lore relevance...

Also just realized its a placeholder cause it looks like just a scribble

Can we wait for part two before judging? 💔

I think it is pretty safe to assume that part 2 will include the final boss of the shadow arc, taking place at the shadow gateway. If they didn't get any new content now, I highly doubt that shadow rifts will get anything when part 2 drops.

Two thoughts come to mind from reading this:

- Thermic Tools immediately remind me of Obsidian Tools from Shipwrecked, while possibly being better.

ikr also dreadstone image is literaly obsidian but instead of red it's black 😂

the similarity is undeniable

I dunno, I just wish we saw shadowy stuff for the shadow rifts, not more lunar themed stuff. Tying lunar progression (spark arks especially, though the entire ancient sanctum is basically just an expansion of the archives which has always had lunar themes) into shadow “progression” really shows to me that they didn’t really ever have plans to make shadow feel like a real counterpart to lunar in terms of progression or feel, and that makes me feel really disappointed…

The fact that the shadow progression isn’t even really able to go anywhere unless you go through lunar first is such a slap in the face to me, I thought the whole point is being able to choose which side you want to progress independently and now this update just feels like yet another expansion to lunar progression instead of adding something unique for shadow. Just adding a final boss for shadow isn’t really enough, at least to me, and it’s very unlikely a part 2 will do anything to help that fact.

On the one hand, I'm like "woaaaah, so the shadow rift finale is gonna be the culmination of everything shadow AND lunar? Is this the true grand finale to DST's story? :0"

On the other hand, yeah I guess their solution to the shadow rift's lack of progression is just... you have to progress through most of the lunar rift before you can finish the shadow rift...

(maybe Charlie will ask for the celestial jewels next :?)

I've been just trying to stay as optimistic as I can through it, I do want DST to have a definitive "final boss" but I've also been super unsatisfied with how Klei has treated the shadow content ever since Depths of Duplicity. Klei's interest has always leaned towards lunar, with every lunar update focusing really hard on giving it a strong sense of progression. Shadow has never gotten anything like that in its entire time since rifts, usually focusing on other content instead and making shadow secondary, whether that's the fumarole biome, a "cave update", the ancient sanctum, or the Great Depths Worm.

I think I'm a little emotional knowing that this update has followed the exact same trend as every other shadow update, which massively solidifies Klei's continued interest in lunar and their lack of interest in shadow. I really wanted shadow to have progression like lunar so that it felt like there was two distinct paths you can work towards, but not only does shadow still not have any unique progression but you now actively need to advance lunar's progression to make any efforts towards shadow.

I think just knowing this is supposed to be a finale to the shadow rift, and by extension likely the finale to the rifts in general, makes me feel really sad for shadow. It really makes me question the point in the planar and alignment mechanics as well, since most of shadow's planar enemies are just planar versions of normal enemies (as in, just red spots or a masque over a normal enemy while lunar mutated enemies typically have unique mechanics and interesting designs. There honestly aren't enough planar planar enemies on either side though) and will likely just have the one boss, while lunar has 5 planar bosses. It just doesn't feel right.

So new tools are infinite or that's a bug? looks like they don't lose durability when you work with them at all, but lose 25% if you fight with them, also they're more effective when heated and warm you like thermal stone

Cold axe cuts tree in 15 hits, heated axe takes 10
