We need more speed items.

Recommended Posts

Right now the only choices for speed items  are the walking cane and the magi.
The players also have access to roads however those are more for setup and bases.
And warbis is only purely for combat.
And the thule club is just 10 percent not really something people go out of their way to get early.
And then there is also beefalo which have speed but also come with their own slowdown mechanics and they don't interact with roads.

As for characters some have innate speed built in with their character wx wormwood wes woodie.
Teleportation via winona wortox and wanda
And others get it through their skill tree
Woodie and wolf.

However I kind of think we need to balance out the speed gap more. especially since The trees have been providing more characters with options that were only exclusive to specific characters.
They don't need to be the best at things but just making it an option so that way people can enjoy being a character more.

I for one want to add 10 percent speed to wendy with the wreath skill if she uses vigor on it.  It provides enough sacrifice for it to be valuable but not too strong.

I would like more items that give speed boosts and also have other benefits. They dont need to be the biggest in class, but some sort of inventory saving good-enough item. Admittedly WARBIS armor and the thule club have not made great showings for themselves no matter how fond i am of them…

The wooden walking stick is a pretty good example of an intermediate item. Good enough to use, bad enough to replace.

i mean its the content island effect combined with how ubiquitous ham bats and darkswords are.

many great items are locked behind too much foot travel with no way of getting around it

they've been absolutely, deliberately avoiding creating speed items in DST for a decade and I can't figure out why, but there must be a specific reason for this

I think 2x speed beef can break some things.  but at that point thats 25 speed. need a 4x multiplier to even circumvent that.
The fact that the walking cane is so beloved should show how much its reallly needed. its more of a qol thing at this point.
And thats kind of what most rift upgrades kind of have been. QOL
Beargerbin. Faster harvest Permanent winter area.
It just seems fitting since travel is the worst part of the game.

I feel i'd much rather see ways of traveling around like being able to move wormholes, and buffs to Telelocators, and Lazy Deserters for example.

A 10-25% Speed Item isnt going to solve the current problems with getting around. Especially if it continues to be different per character.

With some characters getting innate speed boosts, and others jumping through hoops.

Beefalo also are great for getting around, but theres still many issues with them that make them feel awkward, and not worth using day to day.

The constant hopping on and off because you cant do enough actions on a beefalo.

Ornery requiring being fed to ride. (This has its own problems.)

Rider/Glosammer feeling worthless outside of speed.

No Beefalo related HUD besides an unnoticable tint when its about to die. (I say this as someones whos colorblind so maybe its not designed with me in mind.)

Beefalo Bells not being Nameable, or showing you which Beefalo you're grabbing.

Beefalo taking NPC damage from enemies.

Speed is a bane to games like this because of lack of balance of the creatures that can't deal with speed. Game is specifically designed around certain speeds and certain ones that need a walking cane at least to do better against those enemies.

I won't lie, thule club speed buff is really garbo. I feel like the weapon is fit more to fight bosses than anything else, but it just doesn't feel like it exceeds darksword damage at all which really sucks, for an item that's slightly more useful (in theory) for non damage modified characters but fails with it's cost and unreliable damage.

Woodie has a new cane that can be made day 1 also he got a speed form that was buffed by a skill point in his skill tree, Wes can craft balloons, war is was added few updates ago but is true that doesn't work outside of combat and wigfrid an elder spear. Also Walter has a mount which speed was buffed to the sky.

Also they added wanda and wortox which have travelling mechanics and Winona got teleportation perks in her skill tree.  Wortox travelling was highly buffed several times since his addition to the game. They also added sharkboi and their whirlpool tele transportation mechanic to make fast travels

They are adding speed and TP items but for some reason they didn't added a head slot item

Edit. Oh, Wx got easier access to speed that can be unlocked in 1st autumn. Also Weber got a speed buff when walking on webs and wurt over marsh turf, which is easier to amass in early with a pitchfork than cobblestone, and potentially shared with other players. Wormwood's speed isn't now only attached to a single season but triggered on demand

If the total speed boost is less than the Beefalo, I don't think it will break the game balance. Unfortunately, map traversal is one of the most boring parts of the game. It could try to make it less boring by something like placing randomly spawned treasure along the way, but a speed boost would be an easier option to balance the game.

Also, the ghost movement speed really needs a rework. How long has it been since that speed was set? The constants have gotten so wide since then. The current speed is too slow.

all of these are character-locked, irrelevant or don't go above +25%

i don't know why you bothered to write this

So as someone who has been playing since RoG DS in 2015 I can kinda speak on this from experience.

In regular Don't Starve you could do the following and fly off the map.

Overcharged WX (9 Spd or 1.5x normal speed)
Chest/Neck Item: Magiluminescence (+20% spd)

Food: Coffee (+5 Spd) (works for 4 Mins)

Food: Tropical Bouillabaisse (+3 Spd) (works for 30 seconds) Yes this stacks with coffee

Hand/Weapon Item: Stalking Stick (+30% Spd)

Hat/Head Item: Sleek Hat (+25% Spd)
Ground: Cobblestone Turf (+30% Spd)
Weather: Strong Winds (+40% Spd) (SW/Ham Only)

Overall this gives you a speed modifier (if my math is correct) of: 9 (base) + 5 (coffee) + 3 (Bouillabaisse) = 17 (total) + 145% (modifiers) = 41 Movement Speed for 30 Seconds

WHICH - According to the Wiki.gg wiki (verification needed) is just fast enough to crash the game. Source - Its in the Trivia Section

But fun enough, at those speeds I've dodged dragonfly without armor in DS and laughed. Speed breaks the game, so in DST they've stayed away from it as much as possible.

you only need a cane and a road to dodge dfly in DS

Just for future reference, I would highly reccomend avoiding the fandom wiki at all costs, and use the wiki.gg version. It’s the one officially supported and up to date compared to the fandom one that was ditched awhile back!

Yeah I couldn't find the link for the Wiki.gg version for some ungodly reason. I usually use it. But I found the same speed page with the same information on it so I updated my post. Thanks!
