now that this is dated I could repeat this poll but recency bias from the recent skill trees may and will skew results. i should include a reason why people don't main in the next iteration.

The poll results actually surprised me a bit. I really did think that there were more Webber mains, I hope he gets justice along with Warly in the skill trees, they have so much unrealized potential

Keep in mind that getnerfedon’s poll is comprised only of forumites and doesn’t represent all of DST’s playerbase

if I had to make a guess, alot of casual players main webber (or at least it seems that way on pub lobbies, haha) and obviously most casual players don’t use the forums, so they’re not part of the sample.

At the current second Wes is the least played character visible on the server browser list with only 1 person playing him. Webber is decently high up.

it's probably mostly a "new-toy" syndrome, i expect walter's popularity to rise with the skill tree but honestly idk if he will reach wendy level, or wolfgang/wigfrid.

using a simple play rate chart is not really good imo, theres a difference between playing webber for 10 days and leave vs playing webber through out the whole game until rift and beyond

I don't know if he's going to permanently stay #2, but I think he's gonna stay above Wolfgang

Woby is ridiculously fast now. I heard she's faster than a glossamer rider beefalo, which would be 50% faster than Walter himself even while he has a cane and magiluminesence on. And that's without either of the Woby alignment perks which grants extra speed or a teleport that can cross two turf gaps. She gives insane mobility at all stages of the game, including like 2 minutes after you spawn in, and helps greatly in needing to move heavy objects such as for the shadow pieces fight. She gives an extra 9 inventory slots which you can deliver around independently from yourself and will follow your ghost. She helps you with chop & mine actions. She helps you pick things up. She has 3x portable drying racks. Walter himself doesn't really have to deal with sanity and has a lot of different perks like crafting rope faster & in 50% larger quantities, making a portable campfire that stores its fuel while packed, making a portable tent, using all healing items way faster and with a massive +50% to their efficacy, and being able to turn butterfly wings into a healing item to make them not perish while being able to make use of his +50% efficacy perk (and also restoring 3.34 sanity per wing).

And all of that is ignoring the slingshot, which has been massively buffed. Walter has a ton of stuff going for him in basically every area, especially in the ways that public server players would want. Big inventory, big movement speed, big survivability.

technically already happened once with one of my beta polls! though they only did a poll for that specific patch. i wonder if they did for the rest.

I'd say it's easier to first exclude chars who are often mained.

Wolfgang, Maxwell, Wigfrid, Wx, Wendy are all popular choices for being strong characters (at least I think so), Walter and Willow could have been good candidates for lowest main prior to their skill trees, but I doubt they are so unpopular now. Wes is definitely not the lowest, because "challenge character". Wortox definitely doesn't count, I can name at least 1 furry who mains him for that alone, so I imagine there are a bunch more.

That leaves Wilson, Woodie, Wickerbottom, Webber, Warly, Wormwood, Wurt, Winona and Wanda. (Some of these are more popular for sure, like Wormwood or Webber)

Can't be wilson, the face of the game. Can't webber because obviously. I had my mind in either wanda or warly as they are both quite difficult to manage and wanda needs to be purchased.

Wilson was permanently a top 3 character from as early 2022 (if not earlier, but it wasn't being tracked) up until very recently. Even now he's still really high up.

 

Since all the refreshes & reworks I see no reason to believe that the least popular is anyone other than Wes. A few hours ago he had 1 person playing him, now he has 2 people playing him. He's always down there.

Well, for me if someone mains a character, they feel the most comfortable playing as them, they prefer them and usually spend the most time as them.
