Malicious mod

Recommended Posts

I know some friends who are having issues with a "virus" like mod causing chat to be spammed with messages image.png.e2db196b24bdb23f4c98054a771e8b3c.png

We particularly beleive it was caused by say about your ping which has now been removed from workshop. ID 2847661374 for the folder. As we know mostly forge players have been affected. My friends have removed this mod and it is still happening, they also tried re-downloading them all and it still affects them. I haven't seen anything about it anywhere so I'm posting to spread awareness.

Having this issue myself and seen many others with it. Currently attempting to delete/unsubscribe all my mods to see if that fixes it. Anyone have luck getting rid of this?

Lots of rumors going around on discord/steam chats about causes.

Would like to know what's going on.

EDIT: Was able to remove the spamming from my account by deleting and unsubscribing from all mods. Waiting to see if there's more info before I join servers again.

Some pubs, a notable example being a few Reforged pubs, are hosting lookalike mods that infect your other mods and spam messages as shown in the screenshot. The lookalike mods, when viewing the mod list, look like normal mods, such as Epic Healthbar and Show Me. They are not legitimate and infected you.

It is recommended that you avoid joining pubs with mods without having heavily scrutinized their mod lists.

I have reached out to some of you on Discord to help fix your mods; check your message requests.

Do the malicious mods do anything other than make you spam chat messages?

Klei has removed the malicious mods.  However, removing the mods from the internet still keeps them in your folders in your computer. So if you still have the spam messages. You can follow a small guide that we made to our players on Meow servers how to get rid of the virus "residues".

If you have problems

  • Turn off DST.
  • Make a backup of the game worlds in your machine.
  • Remove file `c:\Users\{USER}\Documents\Klei\DoNotStarveTogether\{NUMBER}\customcommands.lua`
  • Unsubscribe to all the mods.
  • Remove all folders in `c:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\322330\`  if any  (those are mod folders)
  • Fully reinstall DST (verify)
  • Subscribe back to the mods.

What are the spam messages about? Pls don’t tell me they imply being disgruntled about Wendy somehow, it would be peak cringe.

is the displeasure that the Zarklord responded to meimage.png.e672b20bd1ce9f9c51efe9dc3350b791.png

however I have now disabled it, for it to go away completely you need to log into the game twice

A mod: someone / something changes your game files or how your game runs (can you think of the name of another type of software that does that?). The responsibility of you allowing modifications to your game comes down to you. A warning in the game explicitly tells you that, on top of it all.

There is a good reason why I never liked the concept of mods in DST and stay away from them as far as possible.

This is the first time something malicious has been done with them literally ever in the over a decade of mod support, to my knowledge.
