How do you deal with multiple back-to-back monkey raids?

Recommended Posts

Supposedly Klei nerfed the spawn chance of monkey raids. But I feel the problem isn’t the chance of it happening per se but rather that there doesn’t seem to be a cool down. They drop so much junk and I have to (or feel like I have to) organize everything. Then by the time I’m done with that it happens again. And then perhaps again?

Last time, today, I got raided once. Then right after that I got a treasure chest variant (where you are supposedly raiding them). I decided to fight them because of the treasure chest. Then while sailing to the island as wonkey I got raided again (normal raid). I decided to just observe what they were doing. They seemed to be clawing at the treasure chest...? Meh, so I decided to fight them. Pretty horrible fight: insane, completely wet and I just transformed from Wurt so I wasn’t used to having to worry about my tool slipping. I could have easily ended up without a weapon (slip, they steal)!

(Then I think they sank themselves on the docks of Moon Quay Island based on the floating headgear and planks.)

I think my biggest mistake wasn’t having a banana at the ready. At least I’ve read that you can drop a banana to make them go away immediately. Is that correct? If so then it’s not so bad:

  • Be out at sea doing whatever else (not monkey chasing)
  • Get raided
  • Fight if you want to
  • If you get raided again: drop a banana if you are afraid of turning into Wonkey

Then you sail to Moon Quay and get rid of the cursed trinkets and then get out of the cursed pirate waters.

So just have enough gear to fight them head on (I just tank and spank) and also bananas for go-away tributes. And also tree jam and whatever else to fix cannon ball holes in your boat. I use Crab King bumpers in pirate waters so ramming shouldn’t be a problem.

Anything more? Something I’m missing?

I keep a pan flute with me on the ocean specifically for pirate raids. Flute them when they get close, quickly kill captain for his loot, hammer the flag, sleep again then sail away. Playing as wolfgang, 4 malbatross mast, so ymmv. This strategy is nice because you get all the worthwhile loot and only collect 1 trinket if things go well.

Oh and one other thing. If you have a cannon on your boat, you can just blow the boat to shreds after sleeping them the second time. Trinkets don't spawn if the monkeys drown. I don't do this, but my harbor does and I use the strategy there.

you can also burn their boat to drown them, maybe you could put ropes under them and then ignite them to make them panic even before fire'll spread from their banner onto the parts of the boat that can burn but that you can't ignite it seems

Panflute, enough good armor, having followers like bunnies or pigs, invading their boat first to take over - there's many options for killing them if you want.

Other option would be boat cannons - blast them to make them flee.

Killing isn’t the problem unless I start running out of the dreadstone set durability and weapons. Only the fact that there is no cooldown.

Looks like I’ll be trying to sink them more. As well as having a banana tribute ready.

Don’t the canons only need to be fired in their direction and not actually directly hit them to be scared off?

The way I personally deal with pirate raids is to go into them with nothing worth stealing.. empty handed.

And if I’m going to Moon Quay for Monkey Portal loot I’ll infiltrate their base Solid Snake style in the dead of night while they’re all sleeping and make sure I’m GONE before they wake back up.

Don’t You have to be close to Moon Quay to be being raided as often as you are?

Give up and pay your taxes. Put all your junk like grass, twigs, rot, etc, in your leftmost slots. The house always wins.

Yeah if 20 twigs or something is the price then that’s fine. I’m worried about them randomly taking something valuablue. I haven’t read up enough on the mechanics.

Wiki: If any of the Powder Monkeys find a Banana as part of the raid, they will take it and immediately leave.

Even if they DO steal something of value they will flee with it and bury it in the ground (you’ll find random skull and bone x marks the spot marks on the ground) dig those with a shovel and you’ll recover not only your own stollen loot, but whatever else the pirates may have plundered along the way too.

Really this was one of the core features of the Shipwrecked DLC (that a lot of people who only got into Dont Starve with DST never actually experienced) but more importantly it’s a feature that if you DON’T ever interact with pirate raids, won’t ever start naturally happening in your worlds afterwards.

I think pirate stashes do have a limit in what all they can store though..

But it honestly works about like Moleworms stealing your rocks or flint if a frog licks you into dropping it etc..

I imagine players unfamiliar with DS’s two DLC expansions (not saying that is you) will be confused by ported mechanics from those expansions but sadly that is to be expected.

My base is close enough to Moon Quay that just going on a boat in the harbor to get something can risk a raid. Literally two times the geniuses have rammed into my harbor with a treasure chest.

I have a travel boat and ship built for war, one has sails, fishin' bin crock pot, the works but the battle vessile has cannons mounted so I can just repel the monkeys, they respond pretty poorly to being blasted.

That’s the next boat I’ll make (boat number 9 maybe?)

Honestly the most annoying part of the raids to me is the fact that they still drop trinkets, its hazzardous to kill them AND avoid them thanks to the cannons they have.

a real pain post and pre moonquay to be honest, even if bananas are available.

Alternatively.. you can build emergency grass rafts and plop those down if you hear pirates coming, something else I should mention is that those very weak “pirate Cutless” the wooden ones that don’t do a heck of a lot of damage, they aren’t designed to be used as a weapon for killing, they’re intended to force the mobs you hit with it to drop the inventory that they have on them (Aka the stuff they stole from you)

to be a pirate you have to think like a pirate.. argghhh me matey ;)
