Isn't it too easy to break pig houses for the materials?

Recommended Posts

Sometimes some players will destroy a whole village, then leave the skins, planks and cut stones in a chest because they have 10 times the amount they needed (or sometimes even leave the server with the loot still in their inventory). How many pigskins do you really need before you start getting more from killing pigs/werepigs? Can't you get wood and stones by other means?

Why not to make it so that the pigs turn hostile once you break one of their houses in front of them? In this way it would be very dangerous to destroy an entire village, but it would still be possible to get materials from the houses in the forests. Since there would only be one pig at a time, it would be easy to dodge and would get distracted/killed by the spiders.

Or something like that. What do you think?

I think that a player who destroys every pig house is only there to troll..

A equally think that pigskin should be more easily obtainable should such a scenario of having all pig houses/pig heads on a Stick in the world destroyed Hamlet gave Pigskin from “Batwaves” which was Hamlet version of Hound Waves, so it would be cool to have a source for pigskin that players can’t kill into extinction (such as bats..)

Once you have a steady supply of Pigskin you can Build your own pig village.

I don't think they are necessarily trolls. Sometimes they might have seen a video of someone doing it (rushing ruins for example) and decided to do the same, or just thought the pig village was useless because it was far from their base (especially if it is the village in a spider forest). At least a good portion of the people who destroy houses aren't trolls imo.

People will destroy them for various reasons, for example if they’re Webber, Wurt or Wortox Pigs hate them and want them Dead.

But I believe you missed the important thing I am trying to bring awareness towards, and that’s if a player does destroy all the pig huts and heads on sticks, building replacement pig houses become impossible (or close to impossible..)

You used to could equally wipe the world extinct of Merms too but now that Wurt exists that’s less of an issue.

It wouldn't hurt to have a way to keep the pigs from going extinct, indeed... But we shouldn't end up with pigskins everywhere either (I have no immediate idea on how to achieve this).

And losing a pig village is annoying even if not all the houses have been destroyed

They won't go extinct if you have a starcaller staff. During the mooncaller event, werepigs spawn and it's a guaranteed pig skin drop.

So effectively, it's impossible for pigs to ever go extinct in a world under every reasonable circumstance. Ever.

Been playing through uncompromising mode with a friend recently, pig's become hostile towards you if you try to break their house which I found to not really change anything as I tend to kill the pigs after hammering their houses anyways. Even then you can still just run away from them. I haven't tried hammering houses with other pigs nearby, but I assume they just ignore you and it's only the owner that gets mad.

I'd say it's not troll behavior to break pig houses, at least until you go out of your way to break every house in the world. Most public worlds don't last long enough for anyone to care anyway, and those that do can always farm werepigs during the moonstone event. It's honestly a bad idea not to destroy pig houses since not only do they give access to solid armor and weaponry, but they also speed up the process of getting an alchemy engine.

There's also literally 0 reason to live pig heads lying around, sure they drop 1 nightmare fuel during full moons, but in the time it takes for that to occur you could've broken the head, made a helmet and hambat and killed a single shadow creature and you'd have a 50% chance to get double what you'd get from the pig head.

If you have a bunch of pigskin just laying around all over everywhere look in your crafting tab under structures, you can rebuild a pig house (with 4 skins) i often hammer down all my pig houses and then replace them with the skinned versions I own- yes I could just craft a clean sweeper and change them, but I normally either forget the sweeper exists, OR I need to destroy a few houses for fast access to planks and cutstone to build my first Alchemy Engine with anyway.

Also I completely forgot about the moon event.. but yeah you can obtain pigskin that way, I’d prefer an easier option though.. such as having one Hamlet Vampire bat appear sometimes in bat waves.

It is a different thing to destroy a few houses in a forest (only 2 houses are needed to build an alchemy engine) and to destroy a village entierly.

But you said they left the skin laying around right? So you can just pick it up and Rebuild pig houses can’t you?

I think people who goes out of their way to destroy all pig houses (which they do, it’s a common occurrence) are unknowingly trolling. They don’t consider that late joiners will have no way to acquire pig skin. sometimes servers do get enough time to make it to spring, and nobody can craft umbrellas.

This. I’ve asked people and sometimes they don’t even know why they are doing that, because they won’t do any rushing. They just saw videos where people were rushing things and consider part of the game to exterminate all pigs just because.

Even though pigs can’t go extinct for good, if the ruins have been cleared it means that you have to kill dfly, get living logs, make a star-caller, and make the lunar event, just to get enough skins to make one house and revive one pig (2 houses per one event, with luck) or make a couple of umbrellas. It kinda is a big nuisance.

Going to any forest and werepig a few pigs, while leaving their houses untouched is a much better and sustainable way to handle pigs, specially when you need pig skins for whatever reason in a pinch. You can also craft your own nearby pig village, or a pig farm of your choice, but I think leaving some pigs scattered around is much better as a backup.

I wish there was at least a mod that made some pig houses unbreakable. Or even one. I’d be fine if there was at least one unbreakable pig house in the world. The piggie who built its house with bricks?

Breaking pig houses are as easy as breaking your base's crockpots.

People break pig houses because they think it's smart and it's good to themselves, and they didn't care about other players or didn't think too much.

People like that always exist (which might not necessarily be their fault actually). I'm sorry you met one.

I met more than one already ^^

Yes, pigs should care if someone destroys their homes. It shouldn't be a free-for-all loot world.

No, I don't see the problem with breaking every house in the world in order to make some easy football helmets and then (eventually) make a pigskin/werepig farm. If someone later needs pigskin for something there will be some in a chest at base, which is better than late joiners having to bring four monster meat to some (now) tier-three spider forest.

Being able to get all that materials from a Pig House at day 1 for basically no cost is a bit too compromising for a multiplayer survival game.

This seems to be more of a singleplayer design leftover, where you did not have anyone to help you distract the Pigmans when attempting to hammer down multiple houses near each other. This however, should no longer be the case for DST.

You can just kill the pigmen first then hammer
