I get that his cinematic and some quotes of his reveal that deep down he's really a good (?) guy that feels guilty about his soul devouring, but right alongside that, his entire functionality is about consuming souls for various purposes. There is no gameplay incentive or system designed to encourage or reward you for resisting that, so the idea that he reallllly doesn't want to just feels... hollow or incomplete, somehow? He's collecting and eating souls, man! Finally he can look the part, and I can treat his quotes about feeling guilty as devilishly sarcastic.
