Wildfires, What are they good for?

You are gimping yourself. Stay on the surface and keep an Ice Staff at hand. It is really that simple to last through a summer without anything burning down.

Gimping myself how exactly? What does summer have to offer that makes it worth staying on the surface? Sure you have longer days which means more time for resource gathering, yet all of those resources can be gathered in the caves as well, hell you actually have access to less resources since berries grass and saplings wither on the surface. Sure I could keep an ice staff to put out fires (or just take the 3 damage penalty for smoldering), but ultimately that's a waste of resources since doing the exact same thing in the caves costs you nothing. I'd argue you gimp yourself harder staying on the surface during summer, since you need to use inventory slots for heat protection, fire protection, and if you've based in the oasis, sandstorm protection, but if you head into the caves you don't have to deal with any of that, and can instead use that time to clear the ruins, something that is very beneficial to survival.

I guess cactus flowers and antlion exist, but cactus flowers have 2 uses, one of them being related to summer heat protection, and antlion is more of a nuisance than a resource, especially due to how easy it is to accumulate large amounts of desert stones, and how few uses they have.

If the fire pump wasn’t absolutely terrible… Summer would be the best season to go sailing in, your base is likely on the main land taking up 6 biomes, my base is gonna be the cute little tightly compact one out on that small island out in the middle of nowhere with nothing on it but the structures I’ve put upon it. The days are longer, Sanity drain is less of an issue (less chances to deal with Wavey Jones or TerrorClaw) whatever burns away out at sea on those completely optional islands during wildfires likely aren’t that important anyway.. if there was more to see and do out at sea, if there were new land masses to sail to and explore: Outside of Autumn, Summer is the best season to do it in.

Misrow your Oar? Oh don’t worry your only a little wet.. but at least your not freezing to death because of a poorly timed Oar rowing attempt.

The thing is: the fire pump sucks.. it should’ve been a mast upgrade that shot sprinkler systems down to cover the whole boat when fueled to put out boat fires.

Speaking of things that suck on a boat, the Deck Illuminator is Equally trash… Klei why do you even design these things if you’re not even gonna let them be half useful? :(

They were probably rushing so they can get an update out before the monthly deadline lol.

Poison is an awesome mechanic. I can't believe people dislike it. Sure it sucks getting poisoned yourself.

My issue is how easy it is to get even on the starter island while having a very VERY big world to explore in a panic with your view obscured by the green overlay to find a source for fairly rare resources to get an antidote, last time I played SW poison did not go away till you either sorted it out or you died which is just not how poison works.

Functionally the game supports poisoning via just foods that have negative health values, they aren't great and its not a generally viable option to kill things but its amusing now and then to bait a gobbler with a bunch of red mushrooms. In actual fact that could be a good addition for summer, unique resources that could lead to the production of highly toxic baits, either directly or as crockpot crafts. Prepare Beargers last meal. Heck with haunting there's some possible meta play to murdering yourself in a controlled manner.

I never personally faced this issue in SW. Poison in general is pretty rare, and in general is usually your fault if you get it (poison snakes are easy to kite, poison spiders only come out if you directly attack a tier 2+ den, you have to approach stinkrays to get their attention, etc.). The only one I can say that can be pretty annoying is poison mosquitoes, but those only come out during monsoon meaning you have a significant amount of time to make a seashell suit/horned helm to stop the poison attacks from inflicting poison on you in the first place.

I also feel like you are vastly overestimating how difficult it is to make an antidote. If you’re already poisoned, you can go over to stinkrays to snag glands at a 50% chance, as stingrays can’t do anything to you or your boat if you are poisoned already. Poison also takes a few days to ramp up in damage, so you have ~2 or so days to get an antidote before it starts becoming very dangerous. In the worst case, you can always eat the venom gland to stop the poison. It will hurt significantly, but it can’t kill you (it will never take your HP below 5 and will in fact heal you if your health is below this) and SW has a significant amount of easy/strong healing sources to take advantage of to recover the lost HP.

Thank You, I feel like people don’t understand the mechanics of something before deciding ultimately ugh this is awful I hope it never comes to DST.

But I never saw it that way, Shipwrecked and Hamlet are both part of the wacky world that is Don’t Starve, they’re just as much part of the Constant as a Pigman or Merm is, & I’d love to see those mobs, seasons & challenges brought over into DST.

This thread has spiraled off its original topic of Wildfires and Summer- but I feel like SW & Ham are important factors to discuss because even something as simple as PeaGawk added to DST would obviously make Luxury Fans easier to craft without them being exclusive to spring and fighting Moose/Goose.

Hamlets Gas Masks would also probably protect against things like Shipwrecked StinkRay Gas Clouds.. so it’s important to factor in all the possible benefits/cons that come with adding SW/Ham features into DST.

The Large Tree Canopy’s are ripped straight out of Hamlet, and those are the games “current” best way to deal with summer soooo were already dipping our toes into the shallow end of this pool.

Sailing and obtaining the first giant nut is great fun!

No.

Unless the Waterlogged biome coincidentally spawns near where you have based it's a huge slog. Just finding it can range from sailing away from shore for a minute with a Driftwood Oar to trying to find one of three equivelants to the Moon Quay in terms of location. Sure, that might be three times less tedious than finding the Moon Quay, but extremely tedious nonetheless.

Two reasons why wildfires suck:

  1. People on pub servers can't deal with them themselves. So, if i want to protect the base, i have to be there.
  2. It can happen off-camera (or maybe somewhere in the corner, where you can't notice it if you are going somewhere away from the smoldering). I am using a camera zoom-out mod, so this is solved for me. In 100% vanilla it sucks though.

Other than that, no flingos, no above-avarage trees, no caves living is needed. You can just carry a luxury fan (or alternatives, but the fan also cools you down). I haven't had a major problem with wildfires ever since carrying some firefighting equipment.
