MondayNight Posted March 1, 2023 Share Posted March 1, 2023 To me both Pure Horror "fuel" and Dreadstone might be a hint at some Insanity mechanic rework or, more-likely, a sort of "hard-mode" after 1st take-down of either AFw or CC (or maybe both). Perhaps this will be the focus of next updates arc post "Return of Them" - progression with accent on Insanity (like RoT was centered around Enlightenment/Lunacy), developing the concept. We might get in Caves (alongside some revamp of old biomes) a new Horror biome, like Atrium, separated and accessible via a special Nightmare Fissure (or aptly named Horror Fissure), being the dimension of Shadows or the Shadow/Horror realm governed by the counterpart of Moon's Alter, that One-Eyed Eldritch Horror entity from murals, the one that brought the Ancients to ruin by morphing them into Shadow Monsters. Access to said special Nightmare/Horror Fissure might be gated behind some special quest (similar to CK's) and possibly having to fight a boss-figure of sorts in the role of a Guardian Horror. Would be an interesting and rather matter-of-course way to progress DST's story by this point, exploring more in-depth the Insanity component (also a desired rework by some consistent part of DST's community). Doesn't help that in order to obtain these materials, you have to get a pick/axe to even consider getting it, which this tool comes from the same crafting station as thulecite armour. And even if you do get these materials, you only get enough to make the helm OR the armour once first time round... That said- I would love to be able to upgrade my spears to deal better/decent damage and be an actual viable weapon. Spears have LOTS of Skins, but they quickly get outclassed by better weapon choices. Come to think of it… can I combine some of this “Pure Horror” with those Billions of Wooden Swords you get from pirate raids? I really and I mean really just want a way to upgrade or in Minecraft’s case “Enchant” my Spears.. And this stuff seems like an excellent resource that would be able to do that. An “Enchanted” Spear would also obviously upgrade to an “Enchanted” Fencing Sword I have several skins for my spears, why on earth do I need to find a better weapon? Archswifter Posted March 4, 2023 Share Posted March 4, 2023 Getting major "Under-Construction Portal/Gateway" vibes from it, as much as we can speculate we have no way of knowing if it's gonna be easier to get or used in something more important in tandem with the Dreadstone material, the boss as it is now is a bit boring, coinciding with the armor it drops as well unless it has some special effect I don't know about/missed. Very bold move for sure to add a a next level for nightmare fuel, but right now its obviously lacking. It's definitely a very very interesting idea though, and I'm really anticipating seeing where they go with it. We're entering a new phase of the game, not just in terms of a new series of updates, but also Klei's finally about to finish up with reworks. This means they'll hopefully be able to focus in more on world content updates and really give this idea time to cook. Orchids Posted March 4, 2023 Share Posted March 4, 2023 I personally think that the solution should be more utility rather than defensive qualities. For example - ever since The Celestial Crown became a thing - I found myself struggling to find a good balance between the armor-backpack-weapon trio. Beforehand, I simply used the helmet slot for armor, chest for backpack and hand for weapon. Now Im alternating between the Shield and head armors. I think it would be nice if instead we could've crafted a Vortex Cloak variant for DST which combines armor and defense for the chest slot (and perhaps even is refuelable), would make it WAY more incentivizing for me to go ahead and hunt down this thing rather than some more defense at the cost of sanity. Also, I found it weird that you cant use Pure Horror in order to refuel things such as the magiluminescence and bone armor. (While it is a waste of a valuable resource, it still feels like it should be a thing. Perhaps even letting you refuel items you can't normally like the bone helm, it would be another nicely added benefit.) Archswifter Posted March 5, 2023 Share Posted March 5, 2023 Unsure, but from what I've read of the crafting description (at least the helmet?) it almost made it seem like the armor gave you a set insanity drain, almost like the quirk/gimmick of the armor was to wear it for the high-end protection and the up/downside of just constant source of sanity drain, it would still hurt your head but keep other horrors at bay whilst doing so. Like an alternative to the Bee Queen Crown almost, with a downside that could also be useful in the right hands, the scarcity would make some sense then given it's already more than impressive protection. If Klei didn't do many things with all the stuffs they added for lunar story arc (looking at you, charged moon glass and statics), I doubt they are gonna do many things with these new materials either.
