Should triple mactusk be a guaranteed setpiece?

Recommended Posts

I think with how much of a factor triple mactusks are in world generation, combined with how good and how rare the drops are for each mactusk, in a multiplayer server not having the ability to provide walking canes and tams to each person, or at least a majority of people, triple mactusks should be guaranteed in world gen. What do y'alls think?

With the inclusion of the hostile flare in the upcoming update I don't think this would be necessary. You'll get to control that yourself.

My understanding is that the hostile flare just teleports mactusks in the world to you, and doesn't spawn a new one entirely. I could be misinformed, but if that is the case, the need for it would still be there

isnt a set piece but a biome. The thing is that there are more mctusk mix of biomes in the files but they only use this one for some reason. Would be interesting to see more variety

remember that for private servers you can change settings to get more camps

Eh, personally I would prefer if they add an Icy ocean biome that has a MacTusk camp active during Autumn, Spring, and Summer only not existing in Winter because "They migrated to the main land". Removes the time gated limitation with Tusks just requires ocean exploration and considering I believe the Setting the Stage stuff is going to be ocean themed it would be nice to include.

Bring back the bubble tracks from shipwrecked, except you can come across a narwhale, a shark, or Mctusk and Co. on their very own ship. Alternatively add it to the flare so you can have like a 80% chance at monkeys, 15% chance at Mctusk party, and 5% chance for Malbatross flying to your location.

I think it's implied they have a boat or something.

This was the first thing I tested in the world settings update and I remember being rather disappointed. You either still just get the 1 in the forest clearing, or a ton of you have the triple mactusk biome. It doesn't solve the problem.

Absolutely.

There’s nothing fun about only having one Walrus Camp in your world, it doesn’t make me think I have to work around it and add challenge. The walking cane is such an important and almost integral item that missing it would ruin a world for me. I’ve rolled back just to make sure either me or friends don’t miss it because we got unlucky world gen and unlucky drop rates.

It’s not just walking canes either, with the addition of Wanda a while back, tusks are even more needed in high supply. Now that they’ve made Deerclops farmable (something I never would have thought they’d add) I could see them making Triple MacTusk guaranteed.

As great as this would be, simply making Triple MacTusk guaranteed would take much less effort and can be added in a hotfix, whereas adding a whole new biome could take a whole update like Waterlogged did.

Personally I think the best solution would be something along the lines of worlds having a 33% chance of spawning the triple tusk biome, a 33% chance of spawning the single player version, and a 33% chance of placing 1-3 camps in random places. I don't like how mactusk is always at the moon forest and he is either nowhere else or he is always in the triple tusk biome.

Something else people are able to do is set the MacTusk frequency to the max. This causes them to respawn once every day but still limit to winter only. I started doing that just so I could get the dang Tusk earlier. Still have to fight them, still have to rely on rng, but increase your chances from 5/winter to 15/winter

That's a frankly problematic issue and it never get fresh, you have 1 or 4, such a big gap.

I think the upcoming Hostile Flare should change so it spawns a Walrus party instead of just teleporting one since at the time their loot is RNG based of the amount of camps you have + how much the game want to be evil with you, it's quite unpractical compared to how Deerclops spawn compared to it.

It's just one thing to improve on the difference you'd make in your worldgen luck for such a thing, and on the 5 players world I currently play on it do be nasty sometimes to get enough of these in a reasonable time.

I will prefer Klei buffing sunken chest instead. This may then provide a real incentive to go sailing and hunting those sunken chest for walking cane, and an all season choice for walking cane.

Currently, You need on average 30 bottles to get a walking cane from sunken chest, and assuming perfect bottle pick up, that will need 45 days, compared to maybe 2 days of hunting for a walrus. Maybe make it 100% chance for bottle to lead to sunken chest, or triple the spawn rate of bottles, which will reduce the theoretical average time to get cane to 15 days. 15 days is on the scale of taming a beefalo, is still quite a grind compared to 2 days,

On this note, I would also prefer wanda backtrek watch to use walking cane instead of walrus tusk and 2 gold. This will increase the backtrek watch cost by 6 twig, but it allows wanda to be more team friendly, breaking the backtrek watch into cane for teammate without canes, and then rebuilding the watch after teammate dropped their walking cane when leaving

Oh, to provide some numbers on the shortage of walrus tusk.

Based on my experience on popular public servers, especially like the old Klei servers frequently with 8/8, it takes about 300-700 days for everyone to have walking cane. 700-1000 days for wanda to have a chest of bactrek watch. This is assuming the situation when walrus tusk is a controlled item. If they are freely dumped in chest, it may take 3000 days for there to be abundant tusk to be placed in chest. There are plenty of people who simply leave with walking cane, or even troll by leaving with 10 walrus tusk.

With 4 walrus, it takes about 176 days, 3 winter for everyone to have walking cane. So even with 4 walrus, there can still be someone without walking cane after 100 days.
