Lower the difficulty and resource cost of pirate raids

Recommended Posts

I'll go ahead and officially throw my hat in the ring of "tune down pirate raid" posts by describing how I'm not a super big fan of them at the moment.

A pirate raid, ignoring the prime mate, consists of 4 powder monkeys whom do 27.2 damage each with a fairly short attack cooldown, I'd say less than that of a spider.  They're fought in a position where pretty much the only option barring costly and rare resources such as pan flutes, is to tank them. With a spear, even with a marble suit on, a monkey raid is going to take down ~50 to 60% of the durability of armor, and honestly, it doesn't get much better with less accessible-out-the-door weapons like ham bats or dark swords/glass cutters. This is honestly very intense drain on resources, and resources that were seldom required for anything else in the ocean in the same way that the raids do.

The ocean is a place that you can access immediately as soon as you get 8 grass and 2 twigs, and the game has put early game boating as a strong and usually enjoyable option. But pirate raids get in the way of that, due to their unique resource drain in the form of armor, weapons, and health, or else death, in such a way that is almost impossible to deal with under unlucky circumstances, especially early on.

In conclusion, Pirate raids introduce a unique resource requirement to the ocean in the form of requiring the player to tank in order to survive them, which means the player needs weapons, armor (preferrably marble or above), and rather intense health drain to the point where frailer characters may simply be incapable of dealing with them. This, in my opinion, does not mesh well at all with the rest of the ocean's gameplay. As a solution, I strongly enjoyed the idea that one had on this forum where only a limited amount of monkeys could board your boat at a time, meaning kiting is much, much more of an option, and the player is less overwhelmed.

Yeah I think pirate raids are kind of ridiculous for what they are right now. It feels kind of bad that my previous enjoyment of the ocean might be locked to Wolfgang and Wigfrid now since they can take out the raids with ease.... especially when Walter used to thrive in such an environment :(

pirate raids bring to the ocean an issue that wasnt a thing in land, and make abigail feel even stronger than she already is.

swarms of enemies on land can be kited away from eachother and into other mods and deal far more easily so they dont become a serious issue that fast, but when you are on a boat... oh boy

they arent particularly strong compare to many things but the fact that i find myself wishing to be Wendy just to have a free out of jail card as long as i dont turn into a mokey says alot

Worth noting that you can tone them down or turn them off in worldgen settings like you can with hounds from what i seen.

I'm on console so have absolutely zero experience with these pirate raids but if they aren't tweaked between now and console release I think I'm gonna be putting them on a lower setting.. they sound pretty crazy.

It's not even the combat that scares me the most, its them stealing stuff from my chests and destroying/messing with my boat structures!

Honestly they're not as bad as people are making them out to be so long as you bring armor and a spear you should be fine handling them on a normal character maybe even bring a follower to back you up if your unsure of being able to take them on solo.

They also removed the whole destroying chests thing.

they dont destroy chest anymore and you dont lose the items forever. Just keep some maps in case you couldn't kill the captain in one of the raids to recover your stuff

also people that dont want to fight them should bring bananas to satisfy them instead of wanting 1 monkey per raid Zzzzz

i was wondering whether they will steal things from your chest or not, since they don't destroy the chest anymore

in my experience they dop everything from a chest and start stealing the dropped things

I can provide some information, or skills.

Pirate monkeys are afraid of ship guns. As long as they are hit, they will run away. If you have bramble husk, you can also wear it to fight the pirates.

You can also throw all your belongings on the deck so that the pirates will not attack you. Instead, you can light their pirate flag with fire. When the whole pirate ship starts to burn, you can win without fighting

To add to this you can bring followers, freeze them, put them to sleep with darts if pan flutes feel to expensive, and more feels like people are too dead set on using a one size fits all solution to all encounters in dst.
