Wormwood is a much better challenge character than Wes

Recommended Posts

The entire idea behind Wes was to challenge players who wanted a more difficult Don't Starve experience under this line of thinking Wes does what he is supposed to as a character but after the release of the hamlet dlc and I believe wormwood fits this role much better. I just wanna say if you like Wes and think he is a well designed character, I respect your opinion but I do ask you to hear me out. After playing both characters I think Wes is more challenging but Wormwood feels much more rewarding to play, When I play Wes and overcome something difficult it doesn't feel rewarding, and then I realized it wasn't actually a challenge it was just tedious and slow. Wes has nothing outside of being a challenge character sure, balloons are a cool gimmick but are not interesting enough (at least to me) to warrant the sacrifices you make when you play Wes. On the other hand Wormwood  despite being a challenge in early game due to not being able to heal the game gives you ways to overcome this hurdle and make utilize tools you would not normally use and make wormwood interesting to play compared to Wes and some other characters (WX cough cough). Another reason I feel Wormwood is a better challenge character than Wes is that he isn't designed to be pure doo doo, Wormwood despite having major flaws still has a reason to be played outside of wanting to play a character who challenges you. If you read this all the way through I really do appreciate it if, you agreed or disagreed let me know I would love to hear your thoughts anyways that's all thanks for reading this :).

Instead of posting this on multiple boards for some reason I think you should take a look at the Wes rework, you seem to be unaware it happened. Like Wormwood he was changed from a challenge character to a normal character. Honestly his upsides are a little similar to Wormwood's, now that I'm thinking about it. Both have something related to speed, while Wormwood doesn't have a perk that's specifically for making it so that the entire server has infinite sanity he can do something similar by farming, and while Wes doesn't explicitly make more living logs he goes through them and other materials slower due to his durability perk.

I meant to post this on the discussions but was not paying attention and posted it on the beta branch sorry for making that mistake (I am quite new to the Forums) Also I would like to apologize for not bringing justice to the Wes rework also just to clarify I wasn't trying to be the end all be all one and only opinion (sorry if it seems like that). I just really don't enjoy Wes's Balloons and find Wormwood more fun and rewarding. Thank you for reading my comment :).

I've heard the argument that Wormwood is more of a challenge character, and I guess so - if you play him like one.  If you go duel all the bosses his limiting healing is going to become a pretty major factor.  However he can easily play passive, setting up farms etc.  Wes can do this too, but Wormwood has perks for this.  He can plant in normal terrain to start producing foods, and can easily mass produce poops and growth formula.  For playing passive Wes is still going to spend extra time harvesting, dealing damage even in minor fights, etc.

idk if I'd call Wes a challenge character, now he's more just a tedious character.  Spending so much more time just harvesting wood and stone sounds horrible.  Getting odd perks that are actually good like speedy balloons betrays the point that he has nothing good, and only things bad about him.  Kinda broke the character for me.

wormwood: speed boost, higher stats, easy sanity management which means that you can use batbat+nightarmor and dont suffer of insanity if you plant seeds, default damage

wes: worst stats in the game, .75 damage, less working efficiency, harder time with weather...

i have to disagree

The point is, one is more fun than the other. It's not a question of "who is harder?".

Add to this recycling all the rot into living logs and bat bat for healing, which is actually good for him considering how easy he can recover sanity.

If one has not enough rot and wants produce even more living logs, one can use tent + cooked bananas in the caves. It's insane how easy and productive this combination is.

Wormwood was challenge for me only when I played Adventure Mode mod for DST, but only because there was no caves and corresponding crafts/resources available, I had no time and resources to domesticate beefalo, and considerable amount of chapters started from winter/had considerable amount of time as winter days in year (so no seeds were available), plus random reset of health (sometimes at 30 hp from max) at the start of each chapter so I had to heal this unavoidable damage.

But in normal DST Wormwood is very comfortable to play, at least for me. I literally ate raw monster meat and red caps, tanked damage and healed with rot, poop, guano and spare mosquito sacks from the ground while my Wendy friend had to make trips to base for normal food before continuing to help me with moonstorms (on public server).

because im lazy to carry seeds or pinecones and in the ruins i dont take care of sanity

also, certain wendy likes to hurt friends near plant boy

sure, wormwood in ds is more challenging. When i tried SW for the first time i decided to pick wormwood to also try him... bad idea, i survive like 6 days, i lost hp by trying to cook, i lost hp trying to make charcoal, some lightning hit me...not a very good experience xD

wormwood is funnier and more rewaeding but wes is more challenging or harder

I don't think Wes is well designed (or really badly designed either, he's just kinda meh) but Wormwood isn't a better challenge character just because he's more fun. Wormwood's only downside really is health, which is a pretty decent downside especially compared to other survivors, but all this means is you need to prepare more healing (Koalaphant pen, jellybeans, bat bat, tents, healing salves, etc). Wes on the other hand can't talk to plants, does less damage, has very low stats and does work slower (he has other downsides but they can be negated) which are all pretty permanent issues and outweigh needing to get more creative than making pierogis.

I meant DST Wormwood experience: there is mod in workshop that allows to play Adventure Mode as close as possible to DS, but with friends (with various settings from "DS-like" to random stats upon entering new world and such).

There was a time I wanted to do dry season start + eternal dry season challenge in SW, and picked Wormwood, because why not? That was very painful I must say, but grass from seeds certainly helped. I think SW is the hardest DLC for Wormwood since there are no bat bats, spiders (and gland for healing salves + silk for tents) are harder to find, reeds for honey paultice and night armor might as well not exist (hard to find early), there is much less rot (for compost wraps) compared to RoG/Ham due to it drowning in the water, and on top of that nitre is finite resource, there is no lightbulbs for easy manure via werepigs, beefalos are harder to find and even pig skin for armor is much more scarce compared to other DLC's.

I don't think he plays the game. He just play this forum. And... For disagree in every single thread hehehe

And... There is no challenge if nobody accepts it. Wes is not a character, he is a joke, a bad one.

I agree Wormwood is challenging, like Wanda (for full potencial), Walter, Warly, even Maxwell.

He plays with me ._. a lot

Ah ok. Sorry for u.

Nah, he is great. ; ) just to better know him, sometimes he might sound a little harsh on forum, but believe me, is just a language imperfection. On voice that words can sound completely different.

wormwood is a character whit a weird mix of player base

the friendly super farm wormwood, that helps the team whit just giant plant food

the ruins rusher wormwood, that for some reason i see more and more of

the not so nice "ruler" wormwood, that commands everyone around to do what he wants, and i alsol see many of these

i dont know but why are there so many wormwoods taht think there better then others?

Thanks for reading my comment, just to clarify some things I said I view wormwood as somewhat of a challenge character due to his major flaw and making you play the game in a different way compared to other characters. Wes isn't really a challenge he is just a tedious slow character (hate to pull a edgy rick) but, if you have the skill to be playing Wes you overcome most of his challenges and he is just a slow and tedious character

Wes is cool cause he is selfless. Funny dances, can't talk, dies first.

Weak temporary walking cane, party balloons to store sanity for others costing his own weak brain.

Spoiler

I don't really use the balloon hat or vest.

I also don't make regular balloons either.

Bad because he is still a joke character with the worst stats and tedious downsides.

Wormwood is good because actual character with funny masochism chop and farming slave.

Also neat bloom state, not tedious downside, and somewhat lackluster crafts.

challenging character =/= challenge character tbf

wormwood has a challenging downside ofc but he has lots of valid upsides to make up for it, a challenge character in my eyes is one that purely makes your life harder without giving you tangible advantages over the other survivors like wurt and warly but tbh since the wes rework you could argue there's no challenge characters

that said I do agree with you that despite being the original challenge character, wes is actually fairly unpopular even among experienced players simply cause he doesn't bring any new mechanics to play around to the table, you just take more time and likely resources to do exactly the same things as every other character, I wish his rework had experimented with him in a different direction but instead we just got a stat reduction and a few items that are situationally helpful but don't expand on his challenging nature at all

When I say challenge I mean a character that has a major flaw but if you adapt and accept that flaw you get some reward.Wes is not a challenge character (in my definition) he is hot doo doo and has minor benefits. The entire reason I think Wes is a poorly designed character is that his traits that make him “challenging” really just make menial tasks slower and much more of a nuisance than usual. On the flip side wormwoods changes the dst loop quite a bit due to lack of easy healing so you do things that you would normally not do as any other character and you are awarded for your hardship.Wes just makes the game more tedious,Wormwood changes how you play, think, and handle various situations.Once again I do thank you for reading this and engaging with my comment :)

I agree. 100%

A challenge is just a challenge when someone accept it. Many many people like challenges. Almost nobody likes wes.
